1. Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines

2. The Witcher

3. Fallout

4. Fallout 2

5. Arcanum

The rest, in no particular order:

Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate 2, Planescape Torment, Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic, Knights of the Old Republic 2.

But if you're looking for more roleplaying games after playing Oblivion, prepare yourself for a shock. A big shock. Because the above games are not only real roleplaying games, they'e also actually goodat being roleplaying games. So, you might want to sit down as you play them, or whatever.

bg2, fallout 1 & 2, planescape: torment are definite musts.

some really old games that you should definitely have in your collection are ultima 7 and betrayal at krondor.

Everything that all the other posters said (except Arcanum I don't know anything about that game) plus Neverwinter Nights 1.

Sorry to all you NWN 2 fans out there I still think the first is better.

well nothing really beats oblivion in terms of the awesome quality and quantity of quests and how they are presented, but you should try BioWare's RPGS (such as NWN, BG II)

What are you talking about? Oblivion had a poor quanity and quality of quests... Anyways I second pretty much all the games mentioned here, can't go wrong.

I disagree. I think Oblivion is 100 times better than Baldurs Gate I and II. IMO, the BG series is unnecessarily complex, difficult, and very boring to play (not counting BG: Dark Alliance series which was very good). Icewind Dale series was just as bad as the BG series. Planescape Torment was very good. NWN was good.

I haven't played NWN 2, Witcher, or Titans Quest yet, but they look really good.

Thanks for the responses everyone.

Okay...then you probably aren't really looking for a true RPG as much as an action/adventure game. RPGs are more about complex character development and involving stories. I don't understand your statement about Planescape though...seems a little out of character, hmmm......

I really like The Witcher. I recommend this game if you like a darker, more mature RPG for a change. Especially after they fixed the long loading times in a patch.

yeah i just played bg da recently it is a pretty simple hack and slash. Is that what makes it good compared to the overly complicated BG? If so id be hesitant to post my thoughts on best rpgs if i were you, or in general about rpgs unless the title goes as : What are the best offline PC psuedo hackandslash/rpghybrids right now?

mfsa covered all the major titles I would have mentioned, so I will advise to try the Avernum and Geneforge RPGs from a small developer called Spiderweb Software. They are incredible RPGs, they are just made on small budgets so the graphics are about Fallout level. mfsa, I'd recommend you give the Geneforge series a try, they seem like they'd be right up your alley.

Baldur's Gate and Guild Wars have nothing in common. GW doesn't replace BG as an experience at all. It's like saying, there's no point watching The Matrix because The Lord of the Rings is out.

And even so, even if it was the same, why would it necessarily be better? Would you say Terminator 2 is no longer worth watching because Terminator 3 is out?

I think this reasoning is why I keep playing X-COM and Star Control 2 instead of the CRAP that keeps getting excreted from out of the gaming developers. They are pandering to this mindset so gameplay and fun are substituted for eye candy. WONDERFUL.........I'll just keep my $60.00 in my pocket.

I really like others that are not mentioned by other people. Night Watch + It's sequel Day Watch if you like turn based combat (Fallout style). If you do I also recommend Temple of Elemental Evil(patch it) + I hear good things about Vampire the Masqurade Bloodlines by the same developers. My all time favorites are: Planescape Torment then Fallout 2 then Neverwinter Nights 2. On that note: I hear that Never Winter Night 2 Expansion: Mask of the Betrayer is even much better than the original game. I am close to finishing NWN2 and defenitely will buy Mask of the Betrayer.

Regardless of out-dated graphics or not, Baldur's Gate, Oblivion, Star Wars: KOTOR 1 & 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Fable, Diablo 2, The Witcher, and Mass Effect (coming in May) are all excellent choices. Fallout 2 and NWN 2 are also top-notch, while Guild Wars is good if you would like a light-MMORPG experience, but World of Warcraft and it's community frighten you.

Here's a game that no one ever seems to speak about yet is extremely good and was made by the people who made Deus Ex (no it doesn't play like it):

Anachronox

It's a Sci-fi turn based RPG that plays like nothing you've ever seen before. No need to worry though no random encounters, it's got the Chrono Trigger type of encounters (enemies just sit in a specific spot). Also other than the turn based combat, this game plays nothing like a JRPG(I hate that term) both in combat and outside of combat. The game has a hell of a lot of detail too. It has a massive amount of side quests (not as many as oblivion but still a huge amount per planet), the game is long (in part to the side quests I suppose) , has a great sense of humor (I'm serious this game is one of the funniest RPGs I have ever played), the cities are usually huge. There are plenty of mini games as well as each character has a "world skill" which will be used a decent amount of times such as a lock decription minigame, an enhailing minigame (it's used by an old man character to tell long irrelevant stories to drive people to their wits end, pretty funny stuff) and so on. This is a game where you will probably spend more time talking to people than fighting, think of mass effect without the dialoge tree in this case (you will get dialoge choices many times but not most of the time).

While the combat is fun, this is the kind of game where you play for the story, and humor. Note if you don't like dialogue (voice and text) and just want to kill then this game probably isn't for you. The battle system is by no means bad but the story and parts of side quests that don't involve combat will definitly take priority over the game.

I emplore you, try this game if you like RPGs of any kind as it's an amazing game.

If you're interested in the combat scroll down.

As for the combat, it has the Active Battle Timer system like in chrono trigger and some of the Final Fantasy games. When it's your turn you choose what you want to do such as a normal attack, use an item, use a special attack and two other things. The Special attack can be used over time during a battle. As time goes on during battle your special attack gague will fill up and you will be able to use special moves. As for the other two options in battle you can choose to move or use. Move lets you move one space on the battle field mosly used by melee characters since they need to be next to their enemies to attack, ranged characters do not need to be next to enemies. As for use, sometimes in special battles there will be an object on the field that you may have to or want to use such as a lever that turns something on.

This statement is absolute truth except on little thing. Warcraft. WoW is the first proper MMORPG I have ever played and rather than finding the community "frightening" as you feel (I'm assuming from personal experience) I find the Eonar server community full of helpful players who didn't mind answering any questions which I thought were stupid/nOOb-ish, Helping out with funds and equipment and there is ALWAYS someone ready for party play. Im not saying everyone is a saint, there are always bell-ends, but in general its an enjoyable experience.

This is not meant as a dig at what you said, just my 2 cents on my particular server. Everything else is spot on.:D (Especially Oblivion!)

Morrowind takes a giant crap on Oblivion. The graphics not pretty enough for you? Try mods. Some aspects of the game actually look better than Oblivion. If you spend an hour downloading mods, you can add much as 50 hours of play time.

Check out my latest screenshots. (During stormy weather, the waves actually move up in down, similar to DX10 Crysis).

Thats pretty amazing! I think I got to try this, I've never played Morrowind (i did but only lasted like...1hr-2hrs tops!). Can you list which mods did you use?
