so i was big into pc gaming when half life 2 came out, and then i got an xbox 360 and a wii and just played those for a while. but recently i just started up a WoW account for the first time (yeah i know...took me long enough) and am hooked.

first of all, please dont give me horror stories about getting addicted to WoW because im not a 16 hour a day gamer....im more of a 2-3 hour a day gamer, and 10 hours on the weekends but that varies, so i have self control :-)

anyway, i built a new rig a year ago, so i dont necessarily need internal pc hardware to soup up my graphics or whatever...im more looking for gaming accessories to accompany my pc gaming. here's what i have right now (external stuff)

- 22" widescreen monitor

- Steelseries 5h v2 gaming headset

- Logitech MX700 (it's an older one)

- Logitech G15 keyboard

i dont use a mouse pad at the moment, but im wondering if i actually spent the money on a gaming mouse pad...do i actually need one? any other suggestions to enhance my gaming experience?

My checklist for PC gaming accessories is rather simple
  • Comfortable keyboard and mouse with proper, stable (and lean) drivers installed at best
  • Mouse pad rated/advertised for at least optical mice - no need to pay extra for "gaming mats", in my opinion, and most are too large to fit my desk anyway
  • A good set of gamepads for older/emulation stuff. I like the MS Sidewinder USB game pad because it most resembles a Saturn controller which works very well for most emulation stuff. Other than that, I have a PS2-to-USB adapter which allows me to use my wired PS2 controller as a gamepad, too. I also have a spare Xbox 360 (third-party, wired) controller that I haven't yet tried for PC games
  • A comfortable chair. When you're in it for the long haul, your back will thank you to have a comfortable place to sit.
  • Drinks and snacks/munchies either available or nearby

I think a good carrying case is really helpful if you like to go to LAN parties. Computers aren't really that heavy, but it's a real pain in the ass to deal with the mouse, keyboard, and all the cables without a neat case.

Additionally, I think bright blue LEDs are essential to any gaming rig :D

I have a gaming mousepad, before I was just using the desk with my optical mouse, and I have to say this mousepad is one of the best things i've ever bought for my comp. It just feels good. It's a matter of preference, im sure any mousepad is good, but mine is a very hard mousepad (not that gel / cloth crap) and i like the way my mouse glides over it.

IMO I think gaming mouses are the most recommended requirement for gaming. All I have is a cheap microsoft mouse but I don't crave for the big accessories and I can play veryw ell with this cheap mouse.

You don't really need anything for WoW. If you were into hardcore CS/BF/FPS then I'd understand.

A good gaming mouse is very important, but you won't get much more value for $100 than you would for a $40 Logitech mx518.

I'd say 2-3 hours is good for a hardcore gamer, anything over that would impede on your well being. No offence to 10+ hour a day gamers its a free county (so lon as you don't live in NK) but that much gaming can really F with your health.

Back on topic, if the console is wired in your blood now you may as well consider a dualshock adaptor or 360 control adaptor for soem games. The keyboard is fine but some games really need a controller or they just don't feel right on PC (eg. Pro Evo and Gears of War).

You are right - I was lying. I don't smoke pot or do any other drugs. I am a 'legalize it' person, but I am also very opposed to the Geeba. All of my loser friends from high school who smoked up everyday went NO WHERE with their lives as of 10 years later.

Not really an accessory, but a good 5.1 setup is a must imo.

Games are a lot more enjoyable when you can hear them the way they were meant to be, especially with a powerful subwoofer and a sound card with EAX4.0.

(always fun hearing rockets/bullets/etc whizz by your rear-left speaker towards your front-center while having the doppler effect give it that 'distanced' sound)

Otherwise, aside from owning a mouse/keyboard you're comfortable with (I don't buy into the 'gaming mouse' crap. It's just a way for companies to sell a 3-5 button mouse with a higher price-tag, claiming that a 50 billion DPI rate will make your shots more accurate in Counter-Strike), a good headset is a must for online titles with VoIP capabilities. Problem I have with headsets though is that my comfy chair always runs over the cord, and thus destroyed two of my head-sets in the past (was too lazy to splice the wires back), and have since been looking for a low-cost wireless alternative. No luck yet!

And for that fact I have the car of my dreams and my friends dont... 1965 GTO with 455 blown over, super charged with raceing cams and intakes... If you translate that into computers it would be quad core, 4gb of ddr3 and tri sli 8800gtx.
