Guys, I don't think English is his first language. Even if it is, so what? When you meet a stupid person in real life who doesn't know have a very solid grasp of our glorious language, perhaps using double negatives and stuff, do you go hey, idiot, learn to talk?

Some people...

Anyway, I think a good game - I'm gonna go ahead and change that to great, by the way, lukewarm isn't my thing - needs these things:

  • to be a lot of fun.

End of list. There's lots of peripheral elemenents - story, character, dialogue, visuals, sound work, voice work, atmosphere, satisfaction, how thought-provoking it is, how engrossing it is... but what it all boils down to when you actually play a game, and how good it is, is how fun it is. There are certain times when I play games for things other than fun, but I think the sole defining element of a great game is that it's fun - and because you enjoy that fun, you want to play it.

I don't think a game needs a quality story, as an example, to be great. All else being equal, the game with the better story would be the better game, but I don't see it as some fundamental requirement of computer gaming quality. That's why I still play games dating back as far as 1993 - games with no story, terrible visuals, god awful sound. Games that have no idea how to immerse a gamer in an atmospheric environment. But games that are a hell of a lot of fun.

It seems some companies will take away fun to bring in more realism. I don't play video games that feel like a chore, I play video games to get away from all that. To me a good game is an original idea that can be made to be extremely fun, doesn't have to be the most realistic physics or next gen graphics, just an intuitive idea. Portal is a good example.

Well the fact is, I'm not meeting him in real life. I can say what I want without fear of consequences. My screen protects me. I just don't like it when people use poor grammar and so I correct them. When I use poor grammar, I don't mind being corrected. Infact the correction is welcome due to the fact I will look less like an idiot. :) I agree with the rest of your post about only needing one factor for a game to be great, fun. Everything else is just an extra.
