Do I need a special program to do it? Are there any free programs that will work?

If you are talking about DVD movies, then use DVD shrink. And burn DVDs with ImgBurn.

It is for his personal use, until he makes copies of the DVD it's not yet piracy, it would only be like buying a Film to watch on a mobile device like an ipod touch or psp etc.. you can have many films on there, and because he bought the DVD he may be just putting them on his PC so he does't need the disc every time.

Use DVDShrink, one of the best rippers. Or handbrake if you want to compress it into another format.

Check this out too: http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-dvd-ripper.htm

that may be so but still you are discussing something with wich you could just go rent a movie or lend it from a friend and then copy it.

plus not evry where it is legal to make a copy of what you own.

so even if he want's to make copy's of his own movies your still helping others to find the method to pirate them.

I wonder if I made a topic in asking people to help me find a site to get no cd cracks for my games would people also help ??

or would evry one go BOOOOOOOOOO PIRATE !!!!

(you see it's a thin line same as this question you could use it for backups but you could also use it for the "DARK SIDE ")

further note dvd shrink is solly made to copy dvd movies on a smaller dvd-r so it's sole purpouse is to copy movies ( do you guys really believe most of those users will use it only for backups ?? I think not )

Actually, Hollywood has just won a court case that makes it sound as if even the act of ripping is technically illegal. The problem is that in order to rip a DVD you have to break the encoding. Real was trying to make a case that their ripper program was legal because it tied the copy to the PC. The court ruled that that's a DMCA violation and they lost their case.

Actually in the UK it's illegal to transfer content between devices. Personally i'ld just ISO the whole disk with Daemon Tools then you won't loose any quality and the menu systems still work perfectly.

So in theory putting my CD's onto my computer, listening to them in my wmp12 library, then putting it onto my mp3 player, doing so is illegal? why then provide the means, how else would you get media onto a device? and if you've purchased it, shouldnt you be allowed to view it on any hardware of your own.

It is illegal to circumvent the copy protection. That is why, nobody has ever been prosecuted for this.

Simple, you can't. Unless you transfer it directly from the shop's equipment to the device you use it on you're breaking the law.

It's dosn't have to have copy protection and you don't have to circumvent it if it does to break the law in this way.

ya, I mean I want a movie thats on DVD that I bought and I want a copy of it on my Archos. You cant just copy the movie because of the copy protection. So what do people do, they bypass it. Its like any media with DRM or copy protection why use it when someone wants to bypass it they will.

It's legal for you to make a backup. However giving said backup to someone in exchange for money is illegal. DVDFab is really good and easy. Also now it has backup Bluray function for those with a Bluray in the PC.
Also DVDfab can convert the DVD to a movie file such as Divx, so you can have your DVD's on an external drive for playing. Setup Media Centre for this, and you can scroll through Media Centre complete with DVD covers and play your movies.

Although there are some legitimate uses of DVD ripping, it may obviously also be used for illegal activities, and so I am left with no option but to close this thread. Please do not discuss this topic in the future. Thanks.
