What could cause my screen to go black?

The problem is my screen will go black at any given time, completely randomly. Its like the monitor put itself on stand by and the light just blinks. But my pc will stay on. If im playing music and this problem occurs, screen goes black and music continues to play. The only way I can get my screen back is to do a hard reset.:?

I really dont think its overheating (checked dust) or its the screen itself. Could the power supply be going?
Note: computer is about 5+ years old.
Any thoughts?

Im likely thinking its the monitor itself is dieing. Do you have another monitor that you can use for a while to see if the problem is reproduceable in another monitor?

Get a new set of drivers from the maker of your graphic card.

If it was overheating it would cut out playing a game in 3D rather than sitting in windows using 2D.

PSU usally cut's out when yhour doing a more powerhungry task as playing games.

If you like to know if your graphic overheat you should check it.

(DL "furmark" and run extreme burning mode)

My immediate thought is that your graphics card drivers are crashing.

If your graphics card drivers aren't up to date, update them.

If they are up to date, uninstall them, run Driver Sweeper, and install them again

You could also go to Event Viewer (eventvwr.msc) and check Windows Logs > System to see if there are any errors around the time your computer crashed.
