what do I need to be able to platy L4D online?

I made the switch to PC from console and the computer I recently purchased is capable of running L4D. But that being said what are the requirments (aside from system requirments) for me to be able to play L4D ONLINE or any other online game for that matter. My friend said something about buying a gmae server? whats that and is he right?

Err no, you dont need to buy anything if you want to play online.

Just start the game, and assuming your PC is connected to the internet, you will see servers (games in progress) you can join. Only thing is, if you have a router at home, you may need to open some Firewall ports to allow the game to play lag-free.

Um, he also needs Steam. Not sure if he buys the boxed copy it will automatically install it for him or not. Can't remember, I have had a Steam acount since HL2 came out.
