It depends. At night I prefer using my surround headphones. But on daytime I indulge with my 5.1 speakers.

Of course the 5.1 if you have a very good sound card and great speakers that support EAX. The sound really goes around your room at various places.

I'd say a good pair of headphones will definitely be more accurate with sounds and positioning. So I tend to use headphones when I'm playing quake and stuff. But just for fun games, my 5.1 is decent enough. So I technically use both, but for the most part Headphones are a must if you ever want to have a competitive edge on others in FPS. Unless you have the absolute 100% perfect positioned 5.1 setup(which isnt easy to do), you can't hear the exact position of your enemy that well.

7.1 surround sound system connected to PC its great to feel the floor rumble with explosions and pretty much anything. Good thing my apartment neighbors make noicse themselves so no one complains unless its past 4am. Good times was when I was living in a house had it cranked up shaking my floor, windows practically the whole house was great, I can only crank it up to 11/40 over here.

I prefer the headphones always. More accurate positioning without the hassle of actually owning a 5.1 surround sound system. Also - Headphones are great for music. 5.1 surround systems not so much.

Depends on the game... I rather play BF2 with headphones, but play Dead Space with 5.1 setup.

In other words, single player = 5.1 , multiplayer = headphones.

Only headphones, it's much easier to understand speech with them.

Actually I will be honest, the reason I bought really expensive headphones is because if I even have the slightest noise with speakers, people will complain. Actually they even complained when I took my headphones off that it was making noises through the wall at one point. So I bought insulated hd280 headphones :) I want to buy some nicer insulated ones, but these are pretty good.
