The GTX280 is the fastest graphics card in the world right now. If you can afford it, I'd go for it. Are you planning on strictly gaming with this rig? Because I'd opt for an Intel Core 2 Duo E8x00 if so - they can reach massive overclocks on your lovely 780i, and they're cheaper than a Q9550 (which is what I was going to get until convinced otherwise - the Core 2 Duos have E0 stepping now, allowing for faster and bigger increases in speed without the added heat!)

Water cooling would be preferable, but not a necessity. If I were you, and I were thinking about water cooling, I'd get a case that accommodates for it, then upgrade later. The Silverstone Temjin TJ07, while expensive, is one of the best cases money can buy, and is great for both air and water cooling. The Coolermaster COSMOS S is a bit cheaper than this, and loves water cooling too. Remember, don't skimp on the case - it's one part of your rig that won't go anywhere for some time if you choose the right one. The Antec Nine Hundred is an amazing case for airflow though - if you're not going for water cooling, then it's one of the best you can buy.

Also, insert token "don't get that mobo, get the BioStar TPower I45" comment here. :D

ROFLMAO

Could always consider the Nvidia 260 series, they not as powerfull as 280 but are quite a bit cheaper, but for ultimate power stick with 280, if your good at OC'in you will probably get the standard version past the 216 core version, unfortunatly the new ATI 48xx run far too noisy and far too hot unless you live in a wind tunnel or can afford the mother of all cooling solutions.

And yeah consider maybe an E8400 Core 2 Duo if its just for gaming (the E8500 & E8600 are generally not worth the big jump in price), the E8400 generally reaches 4ghz with ease but at a 3ghz standard clock is still pretty sweet and 1 of the best gaming gpus around.

Have fun

Well if you don't plan on SLI and you're concerned about the price I suggest this: get a cheap P45 motherboard like the Asus P5Q Pro, a E8600 / 8500 / 8400 and a GTX260 Core216 (some of them are as fast as the GTX280 like the BFG Maxcore). And you don't need water cooling.

I was looking at the mobo for a while but I decided I wasn't going to go 3 way sli (too expensive for me to buy 3 gpu's anyway) and I could live with only 4 SATA and had no use for dual gigabit, so for $50 less I ended up going with the EVGA 750i ftw. Was also looking at the gtx 280 but went with the bfg gtx 260 ocx maxcore for $90 less also. In the end I am pleased with the results.
