IDK, im fine with XP until this whole mess gets taken care of. I have Vista on my wifes laptop and it seems fone to me, but I havent tried tweaking/customizing it to the extent that I have XP.

Nothing wrong with Vista, I've got 64-Bit and it works perfectly with everything I throw at it.

Get Service Pack 1 and update it on a weekly basis.

Vista works great for me, and my rig is worse than yours (see sig). I want to try Windows 7, because from everything I have read- it is faster, uses less resources, and is just about as stable as vista is now (and yes, vista is stable for just about all of us).

Edit: and bootup time is fast, couple min till I am fully up and ready to do what I want... I want to reformat to get it speedy again. Make sure msconfig is set-up with what you want going at start-up, ditch any bloated anti-virus (aka norton, mcafee, trend micro), and use the latest drivers. Also, turn off unwanted windows features, like tablet support.

We dont know, Microsoft has only released the 1st beta so its far away from the final version. It will probably end up looking like Vista but performing a bit better.

It is much lighter weight in ram usage, at least what I see in task manager... Only a little over 1GB in commit charge long after booting it up. It only needs around 350MB to boot from what i've read. I don't have Vista on my machine at the moment, but there seems to be few processes running, and idle CPU usage seems better as well, haven't done any meaningful benchmarking yet.

It feels almost exactly like Vista with a bit stripped out. Most importantly for most people, it isn't named Vista.

Its a trimmed up Vista, it should be a service pack release but that ain't happening... lol Im not sure I like the new taskbar, just a simple icon is a bit lame, and Mac like... The mouse over functionality I do like though.

So Vista users just got ****ed over? Or will they still be updating it? Working on 3 OSes seem like a bit of a pain...I wouldn't be surprised if they stop updating Vista or XP some time soon.

I don't know about screwed over. Windows 7 imo is to Vista what XP was to 2000 imo... Except XP in that case was more bloated, but in terms what what becomes the next mainstream consumer OS. MS will still support XP and Vista with updates for years.

How many Processes do you have running?

My Windows XP runs with 18 processes idle. Windows 7 runs with 33 processes idle. Vista is around 43 processes idle.

I don't think anything of the Windows7. I've not long had Vista and I'll be sticking with that as directX11 will run on Vista it better or I will be coming for microsoft.

Isn't it the longest running OS by MS? Somewhat atypical of the company if you ask me...

I've done a couple of comparisons of win 7 vs xp.. For example, WinRar creating an archinve out of the win 7 iso, the numbers are not pretty. Win 7 25:41, XP 20:30. But 3dmark is practically identical, with win 7 even beating XP on sm 2.0. But the differences on each were like less than 1%. 7zip doing the same thing as winrar (creating an archine of win 7 iso), was actually faster on win 7 as well, based on 2 minutes of processing, just looking at the KB/sec processed. I think Winrar does not like like Vista/Win7, its always been slow...

Ok windows 7 beta 1 releases friday for the public.I am downloading and installing tomorow. The only thing I'm worried about is driver and programs compatibility.I have allot of questions to ask ,just to be shure. Does it support SLI? Will there be a 64 bit version for my 4GB ram? Software compatible with vista is compatible with 7 too? I have allot of games and I want to be shure that they work. I have crysis wars warhead,GTA4,COD 5,Far cry 2,Fifa 09 ,NFS undercover,UT III,red alert 3 and allot of cleaning/tweaking software and I have nod32 .

Drivers are the same as Vista, and there will be a 64-bit release. I would suggest you install it onto a separate partition in the case you run into any serious problems.

I think MS figured (correctly) that it didn't really matter if they fixed Vista somehow, public opinion had already completely and totally poisoned the name regardless of how good it might be. So just toss the name, make a new name with the existing improvements, and watch people flock to it. :D

So if this is good for 6 months, what happens after the 6 months?? does it revert back to Vista automaticly, of do you have to manually install Vista again,, or does Win 7 uninstall?

So far the majority of previews for Windows 7 are looking good. Hopefully there will be some downloads left after I get back home from work - classes. I loved Vista's Aero interface and many of the new sidebar designs, however, faulty hardware drivers from ATI forced me to switch back to XP.

I'll be installing it on my desktop's 2nd seagate and my touchscreen tablet. It'll be interesting to see the changes from both perspectivesand how well the OS runs in terms of compatability.

If Windows 7 performs to expectations, then all MS has to do is get themselves contracted with stardock to implement UI designs such as a nice neat little dock and I'm sold =P

I'm hoping there will be downloads when I get home home school. One microsoft employee said he's sure there will be, and I read that it's probably going to be gone (the 2.5 million downloads) by the weekend.

I'm upgrading soon and don;t want to spend hundreds of dollars on a copy of Vista (or a new OS in general). Would it be wise to use the Beta for the several months (until June I think?) that it will be out? I think I know my answer, but I ask anyway.

Iv'e used Betas before and never had any major problems. I think the biggest reasons to use Windows 7 are that its faster, better interface, and less of a PITA

[QUOTE="yetiHUNTER001"]If you have the beta. And btw, when is the official beta released? Will there be a 64 bit version of the beta? I'm planing to ge it because vista is failing for me . Nothing works as it should. Games lag allot ,takes 5 min to boot up ....SEANMCAD

You are having troubles with Vista so you are going to get a beta for more stablity? are you insane?

You think you had troubles with Vista, just wait until you install a beta OS...this should be funny

Check out the link to see how bloated Vista is and how much faster Windows 7 is. The beta is free to try, if you dont like it you can go right back to Vista.

My only concern is the security, is there alot bigger risk for a site or someone hacking your pc and getting credit card info or anything like that? or is that kind of security about the same since its based off Vista?
