What do you think happens when I go over the Comcast monthly limit?

So I installed a plugin for my router(pfsense freebsd distro goodness :D) called BandWidthD(for nerds, you know d means daemon :D)

Anyway that isn't important but what is:

Well just look at it :P

Comcast has a 250 gigabyte limit per month, do you think they will enforce it?

Dick move: They'll charge you a premium for the extra bandwidth. What I'd like to think: They limit your bandwidth to a speed that's fast enough to browse the internet, but not fast enough to download stuff.

Wow.. I'm disgusted that a landline cable provider has a bandwidth limit. I used to live in the Philadelphia area, and Comcast didn't have one then.. Things are going backwards when it comes to internet providers. Verizon Wireless used to have unlimited data usage on their broadband aircards, now for the last couple of years there's a 5GB limit. Feel lucky you get 250Gigs, I can't get cable or dsl here so I'm stuck tethering my phone to my computer for a 5GB per month limit.

You can tether iphones... and not get caught. Though this won't help you, as it just tunnels it through your house's trafifc(increasing your house's traffic) http://www.3dslice.net/tutorials/iphonetether.html However, you can at the very least change the string user agent of your web browser if you tether an iphone ;) It's all free...

Comcast doesn't say anything unless you go over the bandwidth limit two months in a row. If you do it for a third month they will cancel your contract and you have to sign up for business services with them or a different ISP.

my buddy has comcast in maryland and he even showed me the website for it and we couldn't find any evidence of a cap. He downloaded like 350gb last month and they didn't do anything.

Bandwidth limits are everywhere in the city I live in. I have 250gb myself on my DSL. On cable it was rediculous last year. 3 people paying $74 a month for 16mbps/1mbps + 100gb dl/ul

JigglyWiggly what do you do to get close to the limit? I'll admit my noobishness in this. I have the same limit here in Denver and I'd like to know what it takes to get to that number. I've never got a warning and I don't know what my number is but I'm curious. I read when I first learned of this that it was a hard number to get to for most people.

I was like uhhh... kay), file transfer server I also run. Oh and random downloads. 0% is on porn.

I don't mean to dive to deep in politics here, but if you typically vote for Republicans you can blame yourself if you don't like these bandwidth limits as it's the Republicans who are fighting net neutrality which would eliminate this shaddy practice among many other things.

Net Neutrality pertains to fair and equal service, it doesn't mean unlimited bandwidth for everyone.

I think it regards into packet inspection. As in it might de-prioritize bittorent traffic or traffic on ports 27015 or something. I really don't bother reading into this kind of stuff, so I am probably wrong.

Business class most certainly definitely eliminates the cap in my city - SF Bay Area. I've got that in writing from the local Comcast reps. Besides that, we've got locations that are backing up quite a bit of data per day and would probably be tripling or quadrupling the 500GB cap, with no issues so far. :) Any kind of cap does really annoy me, though - it seems to be a result of the companies overselling the connections they offer. Either they have the infrastructure to offer x number of people y amount of bandwidth, or they don't - and if they don't, they have to start resorting to caps and the like to cover the shortcomings of their own network.

I know Comcast buisness does that, I have a fellow pfsense user bobby who actually works at google and a 50/10 line for 400$ a month, google pays for 300$ of it. He uses 1500 gigs of bandwidth by himself a month.

Yeah, I could see that being entirely true too, and it sucks. :( What state are you in? I'll run it by our local rep on Wed. and see if somebody's giving you a runaround. It does sound like Comcast's different regions operate fairly independently of each other though.

Depends on where you are. In areas with modern infrastructure, Comcast doesn't enforce these limits.

I'm sure I've done over ~300GB combined up+down some months. Never heard a peep out of Comcast.

Well you are right in the fact that you could have Net Neutrality legislation without removing the caps, but the legislation the Democrats have been pushing does in fact make bandwidth caps illegal.

Boulder, CO. I know there are regional differences at different levels, like Comcast offers 40+mbit non biz class series in some of the areas where FIOS is offered. -Byshop

Downloads are more than just what you right click in Firefox and select Save As. Everything you view on the web adds to your traffic count. Youtube, game video reviews, Netflix "Watch It Now" streaming video, etc. Just because your hard drive isn't losing 250gb of free space every month doesn't mean you aren't using your availble bandwidth.

Byshop, I just checked on Saturday (I was at Comcast's local office, hah) and asked - a few different reps confirmed unequivocally that Comcast Business does not do any kind of bandwidth or traffic monitoring or capping, ever - it's not a regional thing, it's an entire branch of their business thing, and that they would run into tons of trouble if they ever tried to bandwidth cap most of their business customers, given how much bandwidth they can burn through. There's definitely no cap anywhere in the country, as long as you're talking about Comcast Business Class in particular.

Yeah, talking about the SMB people. He said that some people will get business class in their home to avoid caps and the like, too, but it gets complicated because business class television channel sucks, so you're generally losing out on any bundle deals by using the internet/phone service alongside residential TV.
