I just picked it back up and I got to thinking...what's next for WoW and how long can this game last.

I know it's numbers of players has dropped a little...down to like 7 or 8 million. I'm curious what their plans are to bring players back or hold the ones they have. I can't see the next expansion not bringing something big and new to the game...it would be devastating not to in my opinion. I know this new flex-raiding will help hold a lot of players...I think anyway.

Anyway, what do you guys think is in the future for WoW and it's players? Of course no one knows for sure...but I'm just curious of your opinion.

It will last a couple more years and in will be dethroned by next-gen Blizzard's MMO Titan.

I don't think Titan will be out in a couple years. Sounds like they are reworking it...no telling how long it will be before we get it.

Agreed. In my opinion, as long as there are WoW players the game will always exist. Asheron's Call and Everquest are still around; the later still having a decent population. World of Warcraft was the biggest thing to hit the genre, and it will simply not go anywhere. I can even see it exist for almost another decade under a F2P model. The only thing working against WoW is time.

It will survive, perhaps another decade or two.

Will still be around in 10-20yrs. Might go the f2p route later on but will still be there. Everquest is still around and that one is from 1999.

Agreed as its population actually has been decreasing at a decent pace with quite a few mmos picking up the players. The Secret World, GW2 , Rift , and Tera being the major ones.

I hope that after they are done with it they will make it free to play. I'd love to play WoW again on a proper server but don't wanna pay for it.

Super casualness.

I started again like a week ago and it's crazy. "Carts and stuff" taking you to the next quest hub which is only like 1 minute away anyway. The talent tree is friggin' gone and replaced by even less customization. Dungeons runs are so stressful and everything just feels crazy. Everyone just runs around being stressed in the game man. And those of these flying mounts are huge, by this rate we'll be riding mounts the size of Ragnaros in the last expansion...
The game feels crazy. So it can only get crazier!

and is it become more insane less people will show and when they finally do what we know blizz is planning (destyroying all the alliance capitals) their will be no point playing alliance anymore there goes a good 50% of the player base as they will feel inferior to all the horde players.

In its immediate future? Final Fantasy XIV being ROFL-stomped and thrown onto the large pile of MMO corpses.

Super casualness.

  • "carts and stuff" are optional. Don't want to get somewhere marginally faster? Walk. I'm sure most people would rather get into the actual gameplay.
  • The talent tree is still there, the only difference is that now, every single talent is an active talent instead of passive. There's now more passive stats added to the game to fill your need for them, like Mastery for example. If you want to customise static stats, there's reforging now too. Take a little, give a lot.
  • Not sure what you mean by dungeon runs being stressful and "feeling crazy." No idea why that would fit into your idea of "casualness".
  • Flying mounts aren't really getting bigger. Most mounts are as big as the first batch of flying mounts in the game, the Netherdrakes. Some are bigger, like Heart of the Aspects but it's marginal at most.

You're right about Blizzard tailoring WoW more to give casuals something to enjoy though. Except it's not changed much if anything for the hardcore.

P.S. This forum is dead. I think I saw some tumbleweed rolling by whilst writing this up.

Tell you one thing they've got in their future. An in game store, OHOHOHOHOHOHOH. WoW's going to be around for a while yet unless Blizzard really manage to **** it up. Is it a shadow of it's former self? Yup. Is it still one of the best Themepark MMOs out there? Yup. That really says something about the quality of the game... or atleast the quality of its copies.

I have played since early vanilla. Quit subscribing monthly at the end of Wrath and now pay for a month or so every now and then. I used to get 3 weeks to a month of entertainment, but this last time I was bored in less than a week. Once you get a character mostly geared through RF there isn't much to do besides pet battles. I also hate the changes they made to healing in Cata and tanks in Pandaland. Active mit is way to stressful in anything but heroics and healing takes your full attention and has way too many situational abilities now. So basically i only have my Mage to play now since I don't enjoy melee DPS and that char is fully geared in ilvl 502+ gear and there is nothing else to do. Hopefully this is my last waste of $15, it just isn't as fun as it used to be and I not willing to commit to a raid schedule anymore. I think it will limp along hemoraging 1 mil subs a year or more until it drops to about 2-3 mil in the next few years. MMOs in general have failed to innovate and since they are so stale at this point people aren't willing to pay monthly fees, hell even the high end f2p games like GW2, TOR and SW can't hold on to paying customers lately. I have high hopes that EQ Next might be the innovation the genre needs, but I have been disappointed many times in the past.

Not me, WoW was great during Vanilla and BC but I won't be going back now with all the casualness.

Agreed as its population actually has been decreasing at a decent pace with quite a few mmos picking up the players. The Secret World, GW2 , Rift , and Tera being the major ones.

That's mostly due to the rise of MOBA's like LoL and DOTA2 in China than anything else.

That's mostly due to the legalization of ownership of MOBA's like LoL and DOTA2 in China than anything else.

fixed for accuracy as they could have obtained them via filesharing about the same time we could legally obtain them:P

Every so often I sign back in after a long hiatus and I'm often surprised at how many people are still playing.

I think it'll keep going for a while with expansion every couple of years, it could last another 10 years as others have mentioned. Maybe not as popular as it it is now of course.

I can't see an Alliance-Horde war after MoP.Maybe Naga and Azshara expansion. After that idk, maybe a new faction?(doubtfull)It is really boring to see how two factions are constantly fighting everyone time after time and beating everybody.Anyway it will end with the Burning Legion and Sargeras most probably.
