I'm eyeing a Gigabyte (brand) GeForce 7600GS with 512MB memory... I'm just wondering, what does memory mean for video cards? How would it effect my gaming?

typical the more memory helps with higher resolution monitors. if your using a 19" monitor you can get the lower memory card

probably not. what games do you plan on playing or what do you intend to use the video card on? just some questions to help you pick a video cardj3ninja

I want to be able to max out C&C3 and CoH, to give you an idea. i will let someone else answer that. ive never played those games or any game similar to it. it also depends on you cpu and other computer specs
Maxing out those games will require a Conroe CPU and an extra GB of RAM. And I think your better of with a 7900 or 7950 as GPU in case you want to max that out.

C&C 3 is supposed to be well optimized though... I'm running at medium at max resolution right now... people with 7600s and even 6800GTs are saying they can max it out.
how much is your price range? 7600gt's are a few bucks off the 7600gs, from scanning online really quickly.. memory in general determines how high of a resolution, texture resolution, and res+AA the card can handle. the other half of that question is if the card itself is powerful enough to handle running those things.. with something like a 7600gs, it probably won't be, so 256mb would be fune. i'd really recommend a 7600gt over a gs though, especially in that price range (assuming low $100's?)

512mb is definitely a waste because it only has a 128mb ring bus. If you want to max out that game then I would reccommmend the ATi x1650 xt seeing as they are the nvidia 7600gt's direct competition. But because of extra piplines the x1650xt wins over. I would though if you can afford it either get a 7900gs, or seeing as you can already run it on med settings just wait a couple of months for the newer and cheaper dx10 cards like the 8600
Get the 7600 GT it has an underclocked memory so its ready for oc'ing, n u will be able 2 run company of heroes on med-max, but ur processor may slow u down a little bit, consider overclocking it.

Yeah. You need really good cooling to overclock Pentium 4s though.
