Unless you have a really good surround-system, decent headphones are the way to go. Much better sound than regular stereo-speakers. Spooky games like System Shock 2, FEAR and Doom 3 are much scarier in the dark with HP.
i went from speakers to a headset about 2 years ago, and its just a better experience overall. You dont get distracted as easily, and sound is generally better.
The only games I use the microphone for has to be CS:S and voice chat (vent)
