Because I'm really wanting Dirt 3 and Hitman Absolution :D

Not a PC gamer here but do people even buy games outside of these Steam sales anymore? It almost seems like it could backfire on Valve. Then again maybe they get so many people to buy games during them that it doesn't really matter.

valve has been reporting exponential increases in profits year after year thanks to sales and a huge game selection with a good service. The sales help, not hurt. Most of us end up buying 10x more games than we can play.
Personally, I hope the stuff I already have goes on sale so I'm not tempted to get another wheelbarrow of cash out :P
Games get bought at launch as they always did, however they sell lots on sales even after the games are pretty much forgotten, it also makes other people want to buy them, people that didn't want to get them before because of some aspects they didn't like, or people that didn't want to get them at all, devs get money and lots of it, unlike renting on consoles, where they get nothing and stores do illegal things (I am glad they're starting to lock multiplayer and additional content with personal keys, needs to happen faster to more games). Not a PC gamer here but do people even buy games outside of these Steam sales anymore? I have some games on my wishlist (some were there for years and I still didn't get yet), but I have way too many games to play right now and I'm not in the mood for any of them except a few indies, I'll most likely only get some DLC for several games, I pretty much got all I wanted and didn't want the last Steam sale.
So true that they more help than hurt. I got Rage for 5 Euro in the last sale, would never have buyed it because of all the bad things that have been said and written about it, but for 5 bucks I have nothing to regret if I'd really end up not liking it. But so far it's fun. Reminds me of a mix of Fallout and Borderlands.

Sometimes I check on Gamersgate, they have some pretty good deals going on, certain games not on sale on Steam could be on sale there.
As long as it is in 2 - 3 months... Assassin's Creed III, Hitman: Absolution, TES V: Skyrim, Stalker, Dishonored and some Grand Strategy games that I didn't get this time around (CK II + DLC, Hearts of Iron III, Civilization V, ..).
Truth be told, I got plenty of games this sale - plenty of long-lasting games, too. Both Witchers, Torchlight II, Borderlands II, Deus Ex: HR, Metro 2033, Batman AC, Sonic Generations, and more games than you can shake a stick at :P. It's fortunate, too, considering I'm going on vacation in mid December and I'm spending a couple of weeks at my parents' house, where there's hardly anything to do.

I buy games that I want all the time. But when those Steam sales hit, I buy games I normally wouldn't have bought.
I want XCOM to go 50%.
It had a 33% discount this go around, and so I bought Dishonored over it since that one had 50%. But XCOM looks sick.
NBA2K13 getting a discount would be nice too.
Torchlight II had a discount but I didn't get it, so I hope that one has it again as well.

Actually yes! I'll even buy a game at launch or (sometimes preorder it)IFI have enough hope/faith that it will be worth it. Though that isn't too often.
You are an embarrassment to trolls.most of the games going on sale should be free. They aren't even worth it at 75% off.
Don't get me started on those god awful Indie games.

Yes, people do. Just look at how well TES V: Skyrim sold on Steam in its first few weeks, for instance. If a person wants a game, they won't wait for a sale - the same way you don't wait for a price drop at retail stores - unless they have absolutely no condition to get the game. The sales are probably one of Valve's main source of income, since they:
1) Push games that were past their 'initial interest' period - I myself bought at least four or five games this sale that I had already considered as past (most obvious case being Thief, a series I heard so well about but never did get around to purchasing it).
2) Reach a broader market by offering more accesible prices.
3) Entice people into buying games that they wouldn't get otherwise (because it's not their cup of tea) and in larger quantity than usual.
Valve wouldn't hold its share of PC gamers if it didn't run at a considerable profit - even if they sell at a lower price.
Think I'll buy Bioshock 1 and 2 next sale. I have no idea what else I want to buy.

Amazon had a Bioshock pack (1+2) for $5 all last week. I snatched it up. :P

I need to stay away from Amazon....so much random buying I do on that site :?
We need "a real game for real gamers" like a simulation where we play as some hunchback typing senseless garbage on forums all day with realistically rendered nacho stained fingers and peripherals as well as a built in graphics benchmark that runs every time you drink mountain dew which demonstrates the game's incredibly accurate fluid dynamics.most of the games going on sale should be free. They aren't even worth it at 75% off.
