Using the EVGA Preicison tool with my 285, with the fan speed set at 60, I am idling at about 39'C and under load, am getting temps at around 50'C. I was just wondering what temperatures are dangerous for the GPU and risking damage. I don't overclock, and the temps I just mentioned are good. But, I just wanted to check in on it.

They are good temps. For graphics cards I don't think that you have to worry unless you're reaching 90 - 100 degrees on load. I have 40 degrees on idle and about 70 degrees on load.

EDIT - Typos :D

Yea, my personal comfort zone is anything below 70C, and I wouldn't trust the built in fan controller. I woke up after a night of folding@home and my gpu was at 85C.

GPU's are built and designed to run a fair bit warmer than what we're used to with CPU's - by design they'll run up to 80-90C often and will be fine there. Past that I might start to worry, though most of the thermal protection stuff that I know of doesn't kick in till over 100C.

Ok. It just depends on the resolution and the game you're playing, right? Like I'd imagine playing at the highest res and settings on Crysis would raise the temps significantly than playing Oblivion or Half Life 2 at the highest qualities, right?

Its been really hot this week and I do not have AC, with the fan set to 70% the highest my cards got were 80C on those 511 work units in folding@home (I hate those 511's really wish they would do something about those they cause so much heat and the PPD on them is so low), but both cards still work fine.

It does depend on the game to an extent, yeah, though not always in a way we'd expect' I'm pretty sure some other games ran my GPU harder than Crysis did :D Although yes, I was talking about load temps. They generally will be pretty consistent across different games, though.

I have run my 4890 at 97c for a test overclock (crysis), and for a couple of hours and it was fine. But i do have a really good cooling case and my PCis on my window ledge which is always open = cooool

if you have a good cooling system antec 1200for example... It would manage @ 95c but it isnt good for the system overall

Stay below 85c and you will be sitting pretty... if you go over 85c downclock it a little. ;)

OK, thanks. I do have a CoolerMaster HAF case which is GREAT. No doubt that has helped a lot as well.

dont you find it wierd that my modest GPU idle at 48C and 66C under load.but again i overclock the dam thing and literally squeeze it.dont you just love when you take full advantage of something cheap

In *C it's like 90-110. Around there. Temprature is rarely the limitor on an overclock for a GPU.
