Hey all,my friend just got a virus and she wants to format her computer because of it, the only thing is that she does not have a windows xp disc, so I said I would let her use mine. But, now I'm unsure because if I give her the disc I'm going to have to give her the kewy code too right? but what happens to my computer which already has the operating system and key code on it? Also, is it even legal to give her my OS disc?

Thanks in advanced

Also, I wasnt sure if this was the rigth forum, so I apologize if its not

1. Wrong forum

2. She needs to have a valid copy of her own software.

3. Your title makes no sense

you're not supposed to install XP, or any windows Os, on more than one PC. as i understand it, there is no "secondary use" so you are not even suppose to install in on your own laptop as well as your desktop for example.

thats not to say it wouldnt work, but it definately would be violating the EULA and therefore i wouldnt recommend it

if u just have a normal XP disc (ie its not from a manufacturer like dell) then u can use ure disc to restore her system. however she needs to have her own licence key (it should eb on the side of the pc case). if the system needs to be unlocked again after its restored then she will have to use her key to do it. do not, under any circumstances, let her use ure licence key.

the disc is not tied to any particualr key though so as long as she has a valid licence then there should eb no problems.

if the disc is from a manufacturer (like a dell restore CD) then it could be problematic. sometimes they have systems in place that ties the disc to a certain machine. i know my old laptop had a system in place where by a very small portion of the HDD was partioned off and used for a load of security codes. the restore CD would only work if it found this partition.

Why not just get rid of the virus? There's about several hundred free virus programs that you can download, run, and see if it gets rid of your problem. Formating a computer because of a virus is stupid (especially if you have to pay another $250 for an OS). If it's in your boot file (comes up when you load), try running in safe mode and then open what you need to find the virus.

There are tools you can run that will tell you the product key you used to activate your copy of Windows. You should use one on your friends system before installing the OS. Not linking any specific one because of potential nefarious uses but googling "find my xp registration key" turned up several.
