Its a 1394 port, its like USB, a little bit slower though. Some External devices will use it to connect to a PC.

What!? I thought FireWire was faster than USB. XD It's got a common use to connect PCs via Cable DSL to a Cable modem. Can't think of much else though...

Its apple's sad attempt at taking over the "port market" I guess.

How can it be slower? My canon camcorder only allows video transfer to PC via firewire and not USB2.0

I always thought that USB 2.0 was faster than Firewire. I guess I might be wrong then...

Firewire is usually used for transferring video from a DV camera to PC since it's faster than USB.

"It's got a common use to connect PCs via Cable DSL to a Cable modem."

Uh...what? Is that supposed to be a joke, or were you actually trying to make sense? I can't tell.

IEEE 1394/FireWire is a port with up to 400Mbps. It's technically slower than USB 2.0 (480Mbps), but, in reality, it's not. It can be used for all the same things USB 2.0 could be used for, you just don't see things like FireWire jump drives because PCs usually have few or no FireWire ports.
There's a second FireWire, 1394b which can operate at up to 800Mbps, but it is even more rare than the 400Mbps version.
