What exactly is Dolby Surround, in realtion to Dolby Pro Logic?

From what I've found Dolby Surround is how a source's sound is encoded, and a Dolby Pro Logic is the decoder that opens up the Stereo sound into 4 channel surround sound.

Another question I had was, will a Pro Logic II receiver, accept a Dolby Surround, or Pro Logic source and decode it correctly, and by that I mean will the rear speakers still run a correct mono track?

My dad has a Kenwood KR-V7040(the front of it is labelled with a Dolby Surround * Pro Logic * Time Link logo), that I'm interested in using, since he doesn't actually use any surround sound content, and he can't even get all 5 speakers to work, but maybe I could ;). I'm mainly wanting to see how Nintendo 64 games sound with it.

Any help at all greatly appreciated. I am still very new at the world of surround sound!

Dolby Surround is taking a 2 channel and giving it a more immersive/spacious sound field, widening the sound. Sound good for some movies and games, horrid for music imo. Only really good in headphones/headsets. On certain headsets/headphones for the PC, they have Dolby Surround that takes up to 7.1 channels of sound and plays it over 2 speakers. Not as good as a true 7.1 setup or 5.1 setup/headsets, but gives a good immitation of it.

Pro Logic/Pro Logic 2 upconverts 2 channel sources and plays them over 5.1 or 7.1 setups. It doesn't sound good unless the sound track/file is made for it, mostly everything is played through the center channel only when it isn't made for PL2. Its horrid for pretty much everything, especially music*Although I find when playing 2.1 channel music on the PS3, it doesn't sound too bad with most tracks when in PL2, still not nearly as good as just 2.1 channels though.* When games are encoded for it, like Wii, GC, PS2, and some N64 games, they don't sound too bad when using PL2, most of the time it sounds better than just 2.1 imo. Anyway, they are still nothing compared to Dolby Digital or DTS sound. True, compressed, non-fake 5.1 sound is awesome! :D Go buy a cheap 5.1 receiver, cheap Sony sub, and maybe some new speaker wire to save yourself from horrid surround sound :P *That is just my opinion anyway.*

I have the 18yr old Sony Dolby surround sound, sounds pretty good playings games(PS2 PS3 what not), movies, and music all sounds pretty good with music too. but you gotta have the newer CD music to get all the 5 speakers to work cuz the old CD music do not have the surround sound builtin I guess..... sounds better than the Panasonic 5.1 DTS I have. I think cuz I got good speakers for it.
