sure, it's possible - but that would mean going: shogun - medieval - rome - medieval - rome, it might be too much too soon, (while the same could be said for medieval, there was an engine leap in there) so i'd say it depends mainly on what the new engine is like (so far there's only been 2 full games per engine so they are presumably working on a new engine for the next tw game)
but personally, i think it'll be a shogun game - it's a long time since we last saw japan, and going shogun - medieval - rome - medieval - shogun has some nice symmetry to it! it's just as possible that they'll bring us something entirely new, or something that transcends one single setting or era
personally, i'd love for them to make a game based on steven erikson's malazan book of the fallen series, it's just perfect for a fantasy total war game
I would rather get a Civil War/Napoleonic themed game, with muskets and cannons. jjfz
you get muskets and cannons in M2TW
Personally, a gunpowder-centric Total War would actually do. I do not understand why people want to have Japan as a theme again; perhaps they are more older fans of the series. I've played Total War since Medieval, and we can all agree that Medieval was the best Total War ever - multiple nations, numerous cultures and military units, etc, etc, while games like Rome were too Rome-centric and felt rather arcade-like.
Gunpowder Total War FTW! A true gunpowder Total War (Thirty Years' War on) would have much more mass market appeal than some Total War set in Japan.
Sorry to say, but I don't see a Shogun 2 coming. It would feel like Rome again - too much centralized around just around one civilization. A gunpowder Total War would allow us to again see the diversity of Medieval, and also with muskets!
Thirty Years War total war. I want to play as Sweden goddamn it, Gustavus Adolphus II rocked your socks.

But yeh, they souldn't milk any other historical periods (e.g going Rome II), a gunpoweder era seems just fine. The Swiss battlesquare mowing down horses while a cannon ball hits the middle killing 30 of their 200 men... Oh that would rock!Â
Psssh, don't bother buying future TW games. Took them half a year to patch & fix M2TW's AI, which was horrible beyond belief. A 628mb "patch" that should really have been in the game on release; this new patch makes the AI take action where before it literally did absolutely nothing - as if they just figured they'd add on the AI later.
Vote with your wallet. Screw Creative Assembly over and maybe they get their **** together.
I think an interesting period would be the rise (and fall) of genghis khan. Think about it, you'd get to fight the muslims in the west, the chinese in the east, mughuls (spelling?) to the south, etc.
Then you'd have the fall of genghis khan and the dissolution of his empire into smaller empires that would undoubtedly fight each other . You could also have the japanese as a nation which would end up invading the mainland.
I think that this setting would be cool (better than shogun sorry to say, and definitely better than RTW2).Â
Hmmmm somebody mentioned the mongols and that sounds nice, but that gave me an idea...
CHINA: TOTAL WAR!!!
Comeon, you gotta admit that it would be insanely fun. It would please the history buffs and the war buffs since China was split into many kingdoms, right? Huuuuuuge armies too and awesome units. Hell you could even invade Japan, Korea, Vietnam, maybe even go a little quasi-fictitious and allow the invasion of the whole South Pacific?
