What is PCI E 2.0?

Well, I know that I have a PCI-E slot but how do I know if its 2.0 or not?

You mainboard specs will tell you if you have PCIe 16x v1.0 or 2.0.

And if I want to get, say, a 9800 gt, would I be able to use it if is only 1.0?

Yeaps you can, but it will only maximise half the bandwidth and wont work as well as you think it would. But good for future investment :)

9800gt isnt going to show much or any gain on pcie 2.0.

9 series graphics card are based on a PCIe 2.0 and will perform better on one compared to a PCIe 1.0.. but the games atm does not utlitise as much bandwidth so you cant see the difference as of now. But in a year or so, PCIe 2.0 based graphics card will have loads of differences (assuming you put it in a PCIe 2.0 slot..).
