I am in the market for a tablet device. I want something that runs Android and that can run any app or game, including 3D games, without any problems. Something that has HDMI output and preferably one that I can use outside in the sunlight.

What is the best one to get?

Is the iPad 2 any good? I read an article that said the iPad 2 is just a minor upgrade and that the iPad 3 will be the next big thing.

I am anxious to get one, but I am willing to wait a few months if something really good is expected to come out soon.

I said this in another thread today, but I'll say it again. At the moment the only tablet I would consider is the iPad 2. In my opinion it is the only tablet that fulfills the tablet experience faithfully. I do own an Android phone, so this isn't coming from someone that's an Android hater, but Android needs more time in the over before it can competently compete with the iPad. Throw any notion about hardware out the window, in the ARM processor arena hardware is only as good as the software utilizing it and Apple is utilizing properly. This all might change a year from now, but at the moment it is my opinion that anyone getting a tablet should get an iPad if they want a silky-smooth experience.

To be honest, now that the rest of the market is going in, you should wait. By the end of the year we'll have devices from, Asus, Acer, Dell, Lenovo, LG,Motorola, HTC, Samsung, Sony, Viewsonic, etc. Most will use fast dual cores, or quad cores (ARM, Nvidia Tegra, AMD APU, etc.). As for the next tablet of interest, well the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. Will run Android 3.0, have a dual core 1.2ghz cpu, 1 GB ram, 1280x800 screen, lighter and thinner than the iPad 2. Apple only had a lead on the market, but some very large players are coming in.

iPad and iPad 2 are the only iOS tablets. While iOS has a lot of apps, the interface does nothing to take advantage of the hardware, instead it treats most things like an HD version of the phone app. Though that does not apply for all apps. Some companies are still split, and few have found the niche between a phone and a netbook/laptop. Again wait for some of the other companies.

I'd wait. The iPad is nice, but it's a glorified big screen itouch. The Motorola Xoom is very nice and has great potential, but realistically is still a beta product. Wait 6 months and I think much better product will be out there including many more apps optimized for HoneyComb.

The Asus Transformer is the best right now in terms of Android.

Yea I'm desperately trying to get an Asus Transformer. After playing with the Acer Iconia A500 and Moto Xoom for a couple hours at Best Buy yesterday, they're exactly what I want. Only the Xoom is considerably more expensive and not competitive at this stage. Acer was nice, but $50 more ($100 for me with tax since it seems to be at BB only), and the IPS display on the transformer is better.

Hopefully they will be readily available by the end of May, if not might try to hold out to see what all the upcomming manufacturers are offering. Even reported there could be Tegra 3 tablets in August. http://www.geek.com/articles/chips/nvidia-confirms-quad-core-tegra-3-chip-in-tablets-by-august-20110216/

^DO WANT Tegra 3 tablet! Never was really interested in tablets but I figure they'd be great for watching movies and stuff at school or when trying to fall asleep.

I setup a Xoom at work for someone and could of ordered one for myself. They are very nice, but in all honesty it didn't blow me away probably because I've been using Droid phones for over two years and the tablets are basically Droid's with bigger screens and as of right now fewer apps. The bigger screen is nice, but again I have a nice laptop so I wouldn't use it that often. If you don't have a laptop then it would definitely be of more use. If you don't have a smart phone, then it will probably blow you away.

Exactly why I want one. Spend a lot of time on my phone because it is so convenient. Always on, easily portable, love the OS. Just the screen is so small think it's straining my eyes. Also bored with Windows and have always found laptops to be clunky, can't stand to use them without having it set on a table with a mouse plugged in. So I don't plan on getting the optional keyboard dock for the Transformer.

Asus has discovered the sweet spot for tablets with the Transformer. Great features for $400 msrp to start. The demand for this thing is outrageous. Any time someone has it in stock, it sells out within minutes, if not seconds. I was originally interested in the Xoom when it came out, but $600+ turned me off pretty quickly.

the ipad2 with the a5 processor is really fast and the screen works great , it is way faster than the previous model or even the ipod touch or iphone. the 16 gig black for 499 is the one to get. plus the battery life is the best, and it fits perfect in your hands. try one out at the apple stores, i got one and everyone loves it, and by the way flash will be coming soon for free,

$499? They are selling for no less than $600 on eBay and Amazon.

That is so strange. Why in the world are people buying them on eBay for $600+ when they can get them straight from Apple for $499? Is there something I am missing?

Get the iPad 2 or one of the new Galaxy Tabs from Samsung. I can't recommend the Xoom. The screen is sub-par, the cameras are bad, and the software doesn't feel finished. The A5 and Exynos CPUs in the iPad 2 and GTab are also much faster than the Tegra 2, which is pretty stuttery...

You can get an iPad and be locked into Apple's store, prices, and censorship or get a Honeycomb tablet and pretty much do what you want for less. Then again I have some Apple stock so please do buy one.

ipad 2 is not a small upgrade in terms of power, but the problem is the software isnt going to use the boost for a while, otherwise it'll be limited to newer userws only (like people who own PS2's cant play PS3 games)

Can't recall where but I remember reading two articles stating the iPad 2 was nothing more than a new iOS (Which can be installed on iPad 1) and a newer CPU. Besides that everything is exactly the same.

ipad 1 was a single core A4 with 256mb RAM vs the ipad 2 Dual core A5 with 512mb of ram....so its not just a minor upgrade. Like i said, i just dont think we will SEE an upgrade in actual uses due to apple still catering for ipad 1's in software dev.

I found a website that is taking preorders for the Asus Eee Pad Transformer and I have a couple of questions.

Is it powerful enough to handle any game and app in the market?

Do all games and apps that are currently available in the market work on 3.0?

Won't play every game or app cause of incompatibility between Android versions Im assuming. So far only found 1 that wasn't myself, the free version of Asphault 5. Guessing the majority of apps will work. Id imagine it's powerful enough to run most, if not all things for Android. Tried games my Droid Incredible runs so slow they're unplayable, but on the Transformer it's perfectly smooth. Unfortunately HD video playback struggles, and you need to re-encode formats like mkv on your pc to make them work on the Transformer. Overall though I love it, feels great on the eyes. Fits my uses perfectly.

You own a Transformer? Can you tell me if NESoid, SNESoid, Gameboid, and GENSoid work on it?

Also, do you know of any wireless or bluetooth keyboards that are compatible?

I just tried SNESoid, kept force closing after about a minute. Probably cause I dled an older version of the app. Was running the games perfectly fine until crashing though. I have no experience with those apps, just tried SNESoid out for the first time. XDA forums may have solutions/tips to make it run properly if there is even a problem.

I just heard today the Moto Xoom was the first to receive the Android 3.1 update. This added tons of support for usb devices, like Xbox 360 controllers. So if you're really into the roms I'd recommend getting the dock for the Transformer if you pick this tablet, as the dock has usb 2.0 ports, while the transformer tablet itself does not.

The Acer Iconia has a usb port on the tablet, and the Xoom has a mini.

You'll find tons of useful info on all the android tablets here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/index.php

Ok I just was playing the latest version of SNESoid Lite, games ran perfectly smooth and no crashing in the few I tried. Also set it to 60fps. Freaking hard using the controls on the touchscreen though.

Damn you, think I may try to get the docking station now if it will support a ps3 controller.

Hey, do you know if games from Gameloft.com will work with the Asus Transformer? I tried to buy a game from there, but it told me that I need to provide my carrier. I am specifically interested in Gangstar Miami Vindication. That game looks great.
