Disclaimer: I'm not saying any of these games were bad, were meant to be WoW killers, have failed as MMOs in general, or that they are bad in general.

These were all games that were hype by players and fanboys as "the World of Warcraft killers". Now that they have already failed, the hype and fuss has died, and they have been patched and improved, which one is the best?

EDIT: I just want to let everyone know that Answer 5 is saying "MMOs suck anyway", it's not a vote for "yay WoW".

Is that the real reason why Quake 4 and Unreal Tournament 3 failed?

I'd say LoTRO. It was one of my favorite MMOs, but I simply just don't like MMOs anymore because they all feel the same. Do some unimportant quests. Do some more unimportant quests. LoTRO had 'storyline' quests, which were really quite good and entertaining. It's too bad all the quests weren't like that. It also needed a better PvP system. I just don't quite get how they expected their system to work out.

Then why did they Quit Everquest, Ultima Online, Asheron's Call, & Dark Age of Camelot?

Blizzard Simply Won because they are Blizzard. If any company came out with a Game that was Identical to WoW with Different Names it would have been a Mediocre Release with sub par Subs, and Meh reviews.

Blizzard brings more Bias to the PC community than any other Company on the planet.

Warhammer Online was pretty fun.

Did EVE Online fail? It's very high quality too.

WAR was never designed to kill WoW. It was meant to be #2.

IMO, fun factor wise, it's #1, back when it was first fresh and new. I have so many memories of keep sieges that were epic in nature.

Do you mean failed as a MMO? Nope, it has about 300K subscribers I think. Do you mean it failed as a WoW killer? It came out BEFORE WoW that that was kinda hard to do anyway...

Q4 and UT3 have no time sink like WoW. You go in with everything so you dont feel like you are leaving anything. Unlike an MMO.

As I said, the FANS and FANBOYS claimed that any of these games were going to be "WoW killers", the developers publishers and publishers never did. But people still refeer to these games as "WoW killers that failed" so I put them on the list. This poll is really meant to be "Best modern MMORPG besides WoW" to be honest.

Have a laugh. You'll find this game's got a mix of a large amount of casuals and also people who play for looooong periods of time that haven't even reached true end game. Try getting Gladiator title or killing Yogg or even Algalon, try doing Battlemaster achievement, try earning 16k for a mount then tell me other MMO's are too much for casuals!!!

Well personally i think that AoC is fantastic now...the only drawback being the lack of players. If that was ever fixed, then i would sub again in a heartbeat.

I also think Vanguard has improved tremendously and while AoC is great for the pvp crowd, Vanguard is fantastic for the pve crowd.

So while these 2 titles did "fail" at launch, i think they are the best mmos on the market right now...besides obviously EVE Online.

Why's Lord of the Rings Online on the list? I don't think it was ever even billed as an attempt at a WoW-Killer and it really tries to aim at a different player base (i.e. players over 10 years old and literate) than WoW does.

there is a good reason for WOW success
and all games that wanted a piece of it, they tryed to alternate the idea but to base them on the same rules

WOW have a very easy to play st yle yet its not shallow
there is no really 1 story line, but more like many sub story lines...
First of all there is the War, The Horde vs The Alliance (I think they were called that way, not 100% sure)
there are also sub quests, like the hunted village, or the pirates castle
all of which had to be cleard off enemys.
There were also quests not only about killing
for excample the Orcs town had a quest where you have to find an amulet that was lost or stolen
and for that you get money and i think also equipment.

There are also dungeons, which is a quest too, but it is designed for teams as alone you will die like after 5 minuts.

and there is a good PVP system, both orgenised or by hunting intruders
the intel is great, so if a dwarf was killed by an orc, he could of use the chat to call for help
and 10 minuts later you would of see 20 top level dwarfs and gnomes and elfs hunting down this poor orc
sometimes there were team invasions which resulted in awesome battles.

Eve Online is a good alternative
there are no real quets but there are bounty missions made by player owned corporations
there are also epic battles of like 20 ships vs 20 ships (and im talking about HUGE ships)
you can also work as a mercenry, to offer your services to corporation leaders or to minerstraiders
all those "quests" got nothing to do with NPCs, pure players paying to other players for protection or whatever.
And the most advanced and breathing economy, Eve online have such a real economy system
that i heard rumors that the entire univarse went threw economical crysis more then a few times
but unlike real world, the admins fixed it by reducing the ammounts of minerals or whatever
so that new players could of gain at least some sort of income
(the economy was flooded with ore so new players couldnt sell and gain proffits)

WoW is for casual and Carebears. Tell me. Do you have 4.3k hours invested in multiple mmo's (looking at older ones such as Ultima Online) to compare to?

If I had to choose I would probobly say Warhammer. I am not saying its a failure just becouse 11 million people play WoW does not mean that is the number that makes an mmo succesful. Even 200,000 makes the game a success. WoW is just the exception. Anyways I think Warhammer failed the most becouse I see it as something similar to Warcraft. Both games are based on an established and well known world. WoW is popular becouse the previous Warcraft games had a huge following. Warhammer also has a following and a universe that has been around for far longer that is why I thought that Warhammer could maybe not "kill" but affect WoW.

I had an argument with a friend recently about this sort of thing and his opinion was that Age of Conan was the biggest failure becouse it is a well established universe and so alot of people should have bought the game, but the truth is that besides the movies Conan is not that well known. There were not many Conan games so the Conan fanbase was and is mostly of the book reading kind.

Unbalanced classes, PvP focus means that its not for everybody. Anyways we arent talking about the quality of the game here, we are talking about which game had the chance to topple WoW and failed atleast that is how I see it. I am not passing judgment on which game is better but on which game had more potential. Ofcourse people who prefer PvP will gravite to Warhammer or even Age of Conan and if someone wants better stories they would maybe look to LOTRO. Do you know what game has decent storylines, decent PvP, a very good PvE? Imo that is WoW and that is why WHO fails at least that is how I see it no need for caps.

Maybe not to you, but a game that has everything and those everything decently or better is a good game indeed. Sure its not perfect it cant be. When trying to appease everyone there the best you can do is find the golden center.

It is "The Fail" coz Paul Barnett was telling people to stop playing WoW. (http://brokentoys.org/tag/paul-barnett/)

WAR had almost 1 million players at launch...but lost 2/3 of them in the later months. They had to close down alot of servers + merge dead servers into survivable ones.

WoW otoh, contrary to what Paul was saying, have their subs increased to 11-12 million during this time period. So yeah, there you have it, Failhammer Online by Mythic"al Failure".

Funnily, I"m a ex-DAOC player and still playing WAR. I like Mythic but just that, they thought they had a real chance of toppling WoW so they got all overzealous and lost their focus, which should always been RVR, RVR and ONLY RVR. PVP has always been a niche market ( a VERY healthy niche one tho) but the masses simply don't like to PVP, no matter how dumbed down you cut it. So its either you set your game around PVP all the way, as Eve-Online did it or you go PVE like WoW did it, with PVP as a side activity.

You try to do it both and you get WAR, a watered down, pointless and repetitive PVP with no real impact and a shi tty PVE.

not everyone thinks pvp is repetitive or else mythic wouldn't of centered the game around it, cause that would be a DA move. oh ya, if you don't speek geek, its (DUMB A**)

I agree with most of what you say but WAR's PVP has a big impact on the world you play in. Not to the extent of EVE but still.

cyborg100000

This doesn't make wow more hardcore, it just makes it a grindfest. Once I hit 2250 in 3v3 arena I realized how rediculous some classes were compared to others. Anyone with half a brain and fast fingers can do well in WoW PVP. And YS and Algalon are only hard because of how gear dependent the game is. YS isn't even hard if you choose to have some help. Blizz just decided to make a boss that is nearly too strong to be killed by conventional means with the gear already in the game. Explain to me why no one yet has downed algalon 10-man without blatantly overgearing the instance.
