I own an LCD and it has been awesome...I've only seen friend's plasmas and they were not as visually pleasing as my LCD....but I have a Samsung and both of them had lower end brands.
I have played games on my friends Aquos LCDs, some where higher end than the others and I have also played on my DLP rear projection. But I just picked up a Panasonic plasma this weekend and it is the best experience I have had playing video games to date. Granted it was expensive so that might have something to do with it.
But a decent LCD will serve you well.
People will say LCD, but it seems like a lazy assumption, and there is seemingly alot more advatnages a plasma has over LCD at this point.
LCD: No burn in or IR issues, Lower Power Requirements (although that doesnt effect viewer experience).
PLasma: No game lag, superior motion handling, better color accuracy and black detail, easier on the eyes (which is more important than you think when playing intense FPS games and/or have your eyes open more on average, on an LCD hose babies will sting after much shorter gaming sessions).
So basically, if you arent bothered by possible temp IR (burn in is about as unlikely as your old Tube tv at this point), i would think plasmas are easier the better gaming display.
But for all you saying LCD is better, please do be a little more informative as to why.
Too many people complian here about there LCD and gaming. Delayed motion, lag, ect.
Plasmas don't have lag for gaming, and have a much sharper, brighter image then lcd.
Plasma's are marginally better, but the difference does not warrant the higher cost, even if you can afford it. LCDs are muuuuch more popular nowadays because they are more inexpensive and never really had a bad name about image burning into screens (that issue is resolved in most newer plasmas)
So in conclusion, even if I had the money I would get an LCD And buy something else with the rest of my money. Good luck and have fun

"Generally" though Plasmas are the cheaper technology. People do point out that if you want a good one they do end up costing closer to an LCD, but generally Plasmas are not "the higher cost" to be justified.
I think the differences are still very pronounced, and not just the more obvious ones like Black Levels and color accuracy, but how they deal with movement, as well as the amount of dealable eye strain they cause (which is particulailry important for gaming).
