I've heard things about Windows 7 but haven't been able to find out exactly what it's all about. Vista is still pretty new version, why would they come out with the next windows so quickly? I figured that when I got Vista one year ago,I would be up to date for a while, but i guess not. Also, are games going to now be optimized for Windows 7? If games will play better on 7 then I'll have to replace Vista. What are the differences between the two? Why is Windows 7 better?

Also, if I upgrade, then I'll lose anything on Vista unless I save it right?

Well Windows 7 is what Vista should have been to begin with. Better performance all round, better compadability, and other odds and ends. But if you already have Vista keep it because MS will continue supporting for years to come and its still pretty close to Vista'a UI.

XP has been the only stable version of Windows even after Vista being on the scene for all this time. Windows 7 from what I've seen of the recent Beta is in a nutshell... Vista-Nice (GUI and Effects) and XP-Stable... It is a better system than Vista for sure. As for the games... The Beta handled a lot them pretty well. About a year or so from it's initial release, and you should see Windows 7 take off.

its windows xp with dx11 and better ram support, a few other little gagets, and then a bunch of bloatware. runs nice and fast at first, like all new installs. once you use it for a while it turns into vista. also bear in mind most reviews in right now were of the beta/RC, as such you couldn't run most firewalls, its also a bit unknown how well the antiviruses were running considering they havn't or weren't certified to run on windows 7 yet, hence we could see farther performance hits once these programs are running at their full potential. overall, in my opinion, they are using dx11 and ram support to force people to upgrade to something alot of people wouldn't want otherwise, or i should say most veteran users. id say 80% of people will be in love with windows 7, so yah most people should upgrade.

It's a fine OS, it's faster than Vista for sure. Though the biggest changes were in server 2k8 R2... way way way better :) Though I still like *nix more because I am a nerderedered except I am hot, I am probably the only good looking *nix user. I am not egotistical at all.

OP, if you bought Vista last year thinking you'll be good for a few years, then you clearly didn't do your homework. That said, Vista is very similar to Windows 7. And you will not be left out of DX11, unlike XP users were with DX10.

Btw, you should purchase the upgrade option to move to Win7 because it should be on sale now (or was?). Again, do your homework or you'll miss the boat.

Windows 7 is just Vista but without the problems, in other words, a fix up

.... just take all your save game files and burn them to a disk or copy them onto a stick ( before you update your OS ), same thing for your docs and music

Microsoft used to come out with a new OS every 3-4 years, like they did with Windows 7 after Vista.

Basically Windows 7 is a Windows Vista done right. It decreased the overall size of the OS, resource managment, and just generally preforms better. It also allows users to more easily navigate while multi-tasking.
