I'm in the UK and I'm with Blueyonder from Telewest Communications, which is one of the more high profile cable ISPs in this country.

Currently I'm on a 2Mb down - 256k up line which is being upgraded at no extra charge sometime before January to a 10Mb down - 350k up

for 10MB down thats pretty crappy upload speeds. You should at least be at 1MB up. I guess your ISP doesnt like people uploading stuff.

You'd understand better if you lived in the UK. Low upload speeds for consumer Broadband are the norm. The standard is ADSL, as opposed to DSL, and the 350k upload speed is very high compared to other similar ISPs offerings in the UK. I can't complain either, since my net usage is almost soley downstream focused anyway, plus it's a free upgrade.

Oh, and by 2 and 10 Mb respectively, I mean Megabits.

Yes, the upgrade process will be happening between September 2005 and January 2006 and works like this.

512K upgraded to 2mb
1mb upgraded to 4mb
2mb and 4mb (elite packages) will be consolidated and turned into the 10mb package

All the pricing remains the same, except for 4mb I'd imagine, since it doesn't make sense charging previous 2mb customers less for the same 10mb service than for previous 4mb customers. The upstream speed is different on the others too, but I don't recall those changes off the top of my head.

time warner cable Road Runner, albany ny was one of the first to have it way back in like 98 or before, but its 5mb down dont know the up, supposedly it went up to 5mb for a limited time, anyone else know if this is true? either way i cant download anything faster than 2mbps and thats rare, like steam but i love it. also my mom gets digi calbe, with free dvr and cable internet for just about 125 a month, add the 40 dollar digi phone and its a nice package.

not suprised but wondering who here has 56k still, i know high speed is over 50% of country now tho.

Instead of saying what your max is why don't people really say what they are actually downloading at. I find it hard to believe everyone is getting these ridiculous speeds when using fiber optic only gets you 5 megs/sec .

Well I was thinking people were actually downloading this fast on Cable modems. Parts of Sacramento get Shurewest (previously Winfirst) fiber service who is now offering 20 megs up/20 megs down....that is just silly. They do have caps, however, although I know someone who went 170 gigs over the cap and wasn't charged.

20 megabytes a second?!?! What is it, OC-3?

Doesn't that cost like $20,000 a month?

Anyway, I get 4.5 Mb up / 350 kb down

No you dont. Maximum with 768kbps upload you get around 85-90. On Avg I am willing to bet it is 80kb/s.

I remember when they were installing the test lines into Natomas about 3 years ago. We were scared that Winfirst would sell to AT&T and they were thinking of capping it at 5MBPs (When comcast was only like 2 or 3mbps). Too bad I moved. I would kill for Surewest out here.

Heritage Wifi 1.544 mpbs, but I actually Dl around 170 b/c they're dumb and didn't tell me that all the trees in my neighbor's yard made it an inappropriate target for satellite. But they'll be upgrading my service to 5 mpbs soon, so maybe it'll bump my actual DL to 200 or so.
