The question is:you prefer to fight with a sword or fight with a gun?of course it's about the atmosphere of the game too.

pay attention that it's not about the best games you played in the genre,it's about your taste.

for example,Best RPG I have ever played [KOTOR] happen in a modern world.but I prefer RPG's that happen in ancient days.

EDIT:Oh I voted for modern by mistake! but my favourite remains as ancient.

I like the stealh that goes with sword, you know that i mean? you can't run in hacking in most games with a sword, it adds that element of realism.

I'd enjoy ancient world RPG's more if there was more thematic and stylistic variety. I'm not a big fan of the whole elves and barbarians themed stuff so I guess modern/futuristic is nearer my tastes.

I object. KotOR and Mass Effect are not "modern." KotOR, especially, happened "A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away." One of the terms you reached for, but failed miserably as grabbing, is "science fiction."

No need to be pedantic; it's obvious you knew full well what TC meant.

Oh come now. I thinks it's a crying shame that he was not immediately called out on this:

He was called out, in the second response. People repeatedly associate high technology with modernity, and magic and mysticism with the ancient world because these are two opposing transcendent threads governing our own relative (extra-temporal) understanding of the terms "modern and "ancient". :P

Modern world RPGs are terrible, but ancient world RPGs are one of my favourite genres! Oblivion is pure awsomeness.

that depends on the game, no? ^^

ok aside from that, I prefer the subgenre of cyberpunk (deus ex) and sci fi, over the fantasy genre, bear in mind that 2 of the top5on my rpg list are fantasy titles.

so it is fairly close.

No need to be rude. I mean seriously does it really matter? Everybody knows what he means from his poll and post.

Anyway, to answer the the question, I'm into the whole medieval/fantasy thing. Even though it's been done to death, I just have always preferred fantasy over sci fi.

I tend to love sci-fi. I can play D&D-style swords, magic and dragons, but they get a bit cliched after a while. I think there are more fantasy settings possible than just D&D-style settings, and that RPG devs haven't done a really good job varying it a bit. I'd like to see more Jade Empire-style games, for example.

Depends how good the game is. I prefer "Ancient". But if you give me a good Sci-fi compared to a bad Ancient. I'll take the Sci-Fi game every time.

My preference would be ancient or medieval setting. The reason is most of the medieval settings are high fantasy that includes many beast creatures like minotaurs, dragons, and such.

^absolutely, positively this. not that there's anything wrong with Fantasy or D&D, but after 25 years of gaming = :|

That's pretty much why I picked the modern/sci-fi option - there are just too many high fantasy games with too little creativity. I'm sick of dragons, orcs and goblins. I want something unique.
