My new computer is getting repaired until tuesday, so until then i have this old computer to use. It has a 1333mhz processor, a radeon 9600 video card, and i think 512mb of ram...

What oldschool pc game should i download and play? something that i should experience, any ideas would be great! thanks.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert (the first one) Beyond Good & Evil (might be on the edge - it was pretty tough on even higher end machines when it came out) Icewind Dale I & II, Baldurs Gate I & II [plus relevant expansion packs] There are tons of older games out there yet :) - check out GoG.com, most of the games they sell will run on older machines quite readily.

NOLF = No One Lives Forever - sort of a Bond spoof (pretty fun if I remember right)

Beyond Good and Evil is a solid choice, as is the original Half-Life. My personal favorite (if you have a copy that is) is Freespace 2. The pinnacle of the space combat genre. I used to break it out once every year or two and play through it again, but I loaned my disks to someone and now it is going to cost me $40+ on ebay to get a new copy..... Why wont it come to Steam....

Yes it is trustworthy, it is a sub-division of CD Projekt (the developers of The Witcher and The Witcher 2). You go there, purchase a game.. and its yours. They try hard to re-work older games (to the limit their licenses with the original developers/publishers allow) to work on modern computers and operating systems. Check out the FAQ on the site and then look at the forums to see some of the community.

I'd suggest old turn-based strategy games - it's a genre that hasn't thrived! So, Masters of Magic, Masters of Orion... even Merchant Prince for a couple of hours (til it gets repetitive!) and I still think Civ2 is the best of the Civ series.

And of course...

Your processor is bottlenecking your GPU. :P Anyway, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, Age of Mythology, WC3, perhaps UT2K4 might work, Beyond Good and Evil, Simcity 4, Rise of Nations, Dungeon Siege 2 and Mechwarrior 4. I had a 2.4 GHz Intel P4, 768 MB RAM and also a Radeon 9600 and it ran the games above very well. Since your CPU is slower, they not run as well.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines

Dungeon Keeper 2

You may have to google procedures to make them run in later Windows OSes.

Personally if my gaming rig would've broken I'd go and play on my iPod Touch or go and hangout with my friends BUT if you're dying to play some old PC game - then it's Red Alert 2 + Yur's Revenge, Star Wars Galaxy, Doom 2

lol try halo if you havent played it. diablo, warcraft and starcraft games can all pass time really fast. theres also counter-strike 1.6 and such. my suggestion would be (if you are a fan of fps games) is get half-life, then get counter-strike 1.6. lots of old school fun right there.

If you like horror games you should definitely play Aliens vs. Predator *1999. No other game could scare me as much as the marine campaign - I was f...ing jumping off the chair!
