For me it was Fallout3 and Left 4 Dead.

Fallout3

-Big explorable world

-Lots of side quests (megaton & android quest are just a few that make it awesome)

-Karma that affects the ending

L4D

- Addictive co-op that works suprisingly well.

- Lots of intensity especially on higher difficulty.

- Good level design with great replay value despite only having 4 campaigns.

What game(s) did you enjoy the most in 2008 and why?

Nothing really! COD4 - I love it when I play single player but I can't play multi-player because of my poor internet speed.

I enjoyed Left 4 Dead probably the most, it had awesome co-op and shooting tons and tons of zombies is always awesome I'm also digging Warhammer Online, not a big MMO type guy but doing the Public Quests are always a blast and Warhammer lore is pretty tight

Warcraft 3

-Great color Palette, Balanced gameplay, Great performance, Miraculous musical score and satisfying from every angle for fans of RTS

Rollercoaster Tycoon 2

-Spent 20$ on the Atari site and came pack with all the expansions, addictive gameplay, lot of freedom for creativity and umm.. it works.

Warcraft 3 is one of those games I have come back to over and over since release. I used to be fairly competitive on the ladder and still follow the pro scene. Definitely a classic.

How was sins of solar empire?

I was going to buy farcry2 till I saw a friend playing it and thought it looked pretty bland (gameplay wise) so I passed on it.

I only bought 3 new games this year; Left 4 Dead, Witcher (not new but the EE was), and Fallout 3. I didn't overly care for Fallout 3 as an rpg but it was a good exploration game to kill some time. I loved the witcher and consider it the best singleplayer game since Diablo for rpgs. Left 4 Dead is hands down my gam of the year, I have not had as much fun as I have killing large numbers of enemies since Doom. It still isn't close to Doom but it is the best effort I have seen recently.

Fallout 3 - My favorite game series of all time stayed true to its core. Great fun and fantastic quests.

Kings Bounty - This game was a total surprise for me and I didn't even know it existed until people in this forum started to talk about it. I love the simple premise and the fresh way they delivered such classic gaming.

Fallout 3 big world? really? I didnt this as much. You might be intrested in an old game called Morrowind, its mega huge compared to anything put out in the last several years.

In fact a few games have lately have been describe in ways that I would not describe them like GTA4 as "open ended" "sandbox" its amazing how the standard of what is..is....changes in a short amount of time

Can't compare since I only briefly played Morrowind but to say that fallout3 is not a big world is insane. Its definitely notable in that aspect. Aside from morrowind can you name other games that top fallout3 in size? (Aside from MMORPGS with multiple expansions)

Fallout 3 like everyone for being probably the widest action rpg game with guns and not only! massive epicness! Far cry 2.. why? i always wanted a game like gta.. but without the police and civilians and car to crash at all the times.. basically less urban and more exotic.. but mostly a fps free play game like gta.. i also like the sense of "get a better weapon " in the game and the tons of 1st person side quests that involve just killing with aiming down the sights.. play a side mission and enjoy some fps gameplay defenlty this game has more shooting than every other linear singleplayer fps besides no other fps got that big worldmap.. i also enjoyed driving in real time not shoot down enemies while following one linear path like crysis or halo or every other linear fps that you can go in a vehicle and shoot enemies as you progress like they were placed there to shoot them down... the post says 2008 right? can i include games that weren't released lately?

I read that it was smaller than Oblvion as well which was about 1/4 the size of Morrowind by the way. I found the DC area to be downright bothersome. It looked like I could go places but I couldnt go anywhere other then the tunnels which were all exactly the same. For me it was an ok game as a new brand of shooter but it just didnt "feel" like an RPG with an open world to me.SEANMCAD

Fair enough. The tunnels and indoor areas do get reptitive but still not to bad.

Point I am trying to make here is that despite if you like or did not like the game it did manage to create a fairly large explorable world. Its not the largest by any means but I woulnd't go as far as saying that its not large - (Thats what she said :P)

I played bioshock as well but I just couldn't really get into it. Going back further Doom3(and Portal for that matter) had a much bigger impact on me than bioschock did despite some of bioshocks cool game play mechanics.

Maybe its the story? - not sure why to be honest.

Sins was my game of '08 and it just keeps getting better. Three mini expansions and a major expansion already planned. Amazing game. EPIC!

I know this came out in 2007 but I didn't play it till this year: The Witcher. My favorite RPG in a long while.

I also enjoyed Mass Effect and right now Fallout 3.

Let's see... There are tons of games I've enjoyed this year: 1. Assassin's Creed: Director's Cut Edition 2. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots 3. GTA IV 4. The Witcher: Enhanced Edition 5. Fallout 3 6. Mass Effect 7. Super Smash Bros. Brawl 8. CoD: WaW 9. ... I have yet to play Prince of Persia but I reserve this spot for it... If it turns out to be a bad game, then it's for World of Goo.

Crysis Warhead - Bloody good campaign/expansion for one of the best games of last year.

Brothers in Arms: Hells Highway - Just a great great game.

Sins of a Solar Empire - Best RTS of this year. And I'm one RTS fan

Left 4 Dead - Do I need to say anything for this pick? :-)

GTAIV and World of Goo(!!!).

GTA4 should be obvious to most, despite its technical problems, it is still a fantastic game with great story, packed with great and funny voice acting, good visuals, a varied and long-lived single-player experience and a fun multi-player part to go with it. Nobody should miss this game.

And then World of Goo, surprises me a little that everyone has forgotten this game. A great and innovative game, combining puzzling with construction. It had a great soundtrack and lots of funny comments. 20 bucks and 10-15 hours of pure fun, that is more than what you get in many first person shooters nowadays.

Right, because Halo came out with invisibility first. (sarcasm) You also missed out on the Super speed and super strength modes, care to elaborate on those? Also the fact that the physics actually adds a lot to the gameplay and the ability to switch suit modes on the fly makes the game a play-however-you-want game. My favorite games from this year were Left 4 Dead, GTA4 on PC, and Crysis Warhead. Sins was pretty cool, but it got a little boring eventually, and Fallout 3 was fun for a while.

ehmm yes it did before crysis but i wasnt suffering to halo for invisibility as for strength and speed.. ever heard of deus ex and jedi knight? as for gameplay differences.. its only stealth or guns... ok you can jump and throw some stuff but thats like speed.. you dont use it as a way to paly but a just a little bit.. eg at many points it requires you to use strength!

Sins of a Solar Empire - Galaxy Forge tools and mods + it's just a cool game.

Far Cry 2 - It has an open environment, and after playing the first one this one was a must.

Fallout 3 - I liked the look, gameplay, feel, and grit of it.

CS:S - I play this more than anything.
