The idea of this thread is so you can find out with the money you have the best card you can get!

in this im going to try and summarise the video cards you can get for each price point along with answering basic quesions

(dont be shocked when you see $1200 im going down slowly)

NOTE: The best single card currently available is the NVidia 7800GTX which is a vastly better than the X850XT-PE

PCI-EXPRES

Ultra HIGH END $1200 or £800

2 Nvidia 7800GTX's in Sli

Use two of Nvidia's newest graphics card together in compatible motherboard for the Ultimate gaming experiance

Rough guid to playable settings : 1600x1200 2xAA/4xAA 16xAF

HIGH END $499 or £340-400

Nvidia 7800 GTX

Rough guide to playable settings : 1600x1200 2xAA 8AF

$439-470 or £250-280

ATi's X850XT-PE

ATis current flagship model, in my opinion not worth the premium over the XT as they feature the same core and if your around this pricepoint then $120 more for the 7800GTX wont be stressful for some!

Rough Guide to playable settings : High quality 1600x1200

$369 or £200-250

ATI X850XT

ATi's second best graphics card currently available but only slightly slower, Exactly the same cooler and core no physocal differences

Rough Guide to playable settings : High quality 1600x1200

$265-350 or £220-240

Nvidia's 6800GT

Nvidia's 3rd best single card and still excellent bang for the buck

ATi's X800XL

A brilliant Card only slightly slower than 6800GT and slightly cheaper so its a toss up between the the two.

$155-200 or £120-140

Nvidia's 6600GT

Very popular card due to the great price-performance ratio.

Rough guide to playable settings : High 1024x768 /1024x1280

$110-120 or £65-70

Nvidia's 6600

Good performer in its own right however if you can afford it its worth the extra to go with the 6600GT

$60 or £40

This is where things get mess due to the sheer volume of products

Nvidia's 6200 Turbocache

Make sure its the 128-bit version and that your system has 512mb ram

**Avoid 32-bit model at all costs**

AGP

$439-460

ATi's X850 XT-Platium Edition

ATi's current flagship model and the performance king (albeit by a few percent) of current AGP cards

**PLEASE NOTE**
This card is not on the same level of performance as the 7800GTX which is currently the single fastest card

$290-320

Nvidia's 6800GT

Again but this time in AGP form

(X800XLs are still currently quite expensive in AGP form and will add when more readily available as they are not worth a premium for slightly less performance on average)

$155-200

Nvidia's 6600GT

The best mid range video card available fro many years with all the features of the high end GPU's

(Be sure to buy the AGP version just because they are in both sections does not mean they are the same ;) )

$120-140

ATi's 9800Pro

This was ATi's old flagship card of the generation better than all the (NV3x) FX5x00
I only really reccomend this card if you are on a strict budget which you cannot deviate from, the 6600GT offers better performance (5-10%) along with more modern features such as Shader Model 3.0

$75

ATi's 9600Pro

It may almost be three generations old but nothing can denie how good the 9x00's were, a solid performer

6600GT and above will be able to handle current and new games well on high settings ie Battlefield 2

The Future

Worried that your New card will be out shadowed?

Well on the horizon currently we have ATi's new high end core the R520

This card is expected to have 24 or 32 pixel pipelines

We can expect it to surpass 7800GTX performance because of the time they have to develop and refine this chip

Now that ATI know their competition. . . . .

However we can expect Nvidia to have something to counter the R520

A good indication is the forgoing of using the ultra title with the new 7800GTX

So i would say expect a 7800 ULTRA down the line

Questions

Question : I need a video card for my system it only has a PCI slot
Answer : You are very limited in cards that offer any performance in new games Nvidias 5700LE
or a new Graphics card and motherboard

Question : 6800GT or X800XL
Answer : If theres little price difference then the GT performs slightly better overall

Question
: Whats the difference between PCI and PCI-E
Answer : PCI is used mainly for pheriphals like network cards modems and older graphics cards, PCI-E is the new graphics standard allowing for a degree of future-proofing giving you an upgrade path for many years to come

Question : What do i need to use 2 cards in SLI (crossfire will be done later)
Answer : Well for a start 2 identical card from the same manafacturer, A motherboard with 2 PCI-E 16X slots validated with the SLI logo - currently only NForce4 and Some intel chipsets are certified and supported

Question : What would you reccomend for a gamer on a medium sized budget
Answer : The 6600GT is an excellent card excelling in new games able to play every game on high at around 1024x768 and in some cases higher

Question
: What is the difference between ATi's `XT` and `XT-PlatinumEdition`
Answer : Found on theirhigh end boards, generally the only thing is a slight increase in clocks in favour of the XT-PE along with a price premium. In the case of the X850 series both are identical chip wise with nothing physically different except for clockspeeds

Question :When will the 7800GTX be available in AGP?
Answer : Currently it seems Nvidia dont have plans to bridge the 7800GTX however ATi have confirmed that they will make AGP versions of cards based on the R520 and derivatives so i think it is highly unlikely that Nvidia will let ATi canabalise the still substantial AGP market

PLEASE NOTE: My prices are a rough estimate gathered from experiance and a trip around Newegg so may be slightly off.

Opinions stated are just my own personal views and should not be taken as fact

The 6800, when unlocked is almost as good as the X800 Pro I believe. I just bought one from New Egg for $189.

Yeah, but if we get into unlocking pipes and overclocking, it's going to make a price guide like this a whole lot more complicated. I say, just stick with out of the box performance to determine the best cards.

I'd have to agree with that one. Despite some minor issues with stability, the Radeon 9 series performs better than the GeForce 5 series. Overall, the thread seems pretty good. However, it looks like you forgot to fill in some of the blanks prior to posting it. :P I know that it's a "work-in-progress," but it's better to just wait a little longer to complete the initial posts before posting a thread.

Between 75$ and 150$ there is room for an intermediate card, like a GF 6600 non GT or a radeon 9800pro for example

I have a 9800pro that I have had for quite some time and I am suprised how well it has held up. You can Find one on Newegg for around $130. If you can get another $30 then I would go with the 6600gt but the 9800pro is a great card for the money

Hi, im looking for a ATI Radeon X800 graphics card, which PCi-E card will be the best to go for? Theres alot of other companies selling these cards, which company is the best to purchase from? And also I dont mind if its Platinum Edition, XL, XT or whatnot lol aslong as it uses a single PCi-E slot ill be happy :) Im from the UK btw so any sites selling these cards from the states are pretty much pointless for me. Thanks in advance.

also whats the recommended PSU for this card?
Tiamat_Zero

im in the UK to but doing it in pounds wouldnt of helped many people here (i will add pounds later)

Well it depends on your budget the X850 Series use dual slot coolers though (i suppose i'll have to stick that in too)

So probably the XL i use overclockers.co.uk and will take all my prices from there for uk

I think 350 400watt quality PSU ie Antec

**UPdated PCI-E to include UK pricing

Here in Holland you can buy the XFX Geforce 6800GT for 269 euro's...so thats like 280 dollars or lower. Its quite low-price for such a good card. I think i will buy that instead of the 6600 GT:) So for the dutchmen in this topic....look for the card cause its a real bargain!!!

Actaully 269 in Euros is about $320-$330 USD. We have a weakening dollar to thank for that. That is about the nomal asking price these days though.

doh!!...and i thought i had news :P...ok i thought it wasnt such a difference between dollars and euro's but it seems to get bigger...oh well...
I still want to buy it :P..is it a big difference between 6600 GT and 6800 GT or is it less difference than i think  Because i want to buy a new video card and i want to have a video card that can handle the upcoming games like BF2 or F.E.A.R and Age of Empires 3...it will be a big difference for me, because my actual video card is a Geforce FX 5200 128 mb:|

The Geforce 6600 GT will run your games well, but it is hampered for future games when it comes to memory buswidth and the amount of pixel pipelines. The Geforce 6800 Gt is, however, plain mindblowing.. but also costs about twice more.

Not in holland here....you know, the motherf*ckers on the market ask 199 euro's for the card. And in america thats 199 DOLLARS, so that is 150 or less euro's and the f*ckers still ask 199 euro's. So it is 70 euro's difference here :P But still...i have not a clear answer on my question. The conclusion is that if i want to save money i should buy the 6600 GT because its almost no difference with the 6800 GT and if i am capable of spending a 70 euro more or 110 dollars i can get better card...hmm. maybe i should open my own topic for this

Good job on the info. Now I have my own question.

I am so torn between these two cards -

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductCompare.asp?CompareItemList=N82E16814122212,N82E16814122206&SubCategory=48

The prices are about the same, but there are some differences in the specs that are confusing me.

The memory clock and core clock are less on the one, but its memory interface is 256. How will this play into performance?

Any help would be appreciated.

You should always try and avoid "LE" cards (and "SE" cards when it comes to ATI's lineup). The 6600GT is still the better card between those two.
You forgot the NVIDIA Geforce 6800 256MB 16X PCI EXPRESS VIDEO CARDAuronCloud7
Not for PCI-Express. It's just still too expensive and doesn't deliver enough of a performance increase over the 6600GT to justify the extra money for it. For AGP however, considering how muuch cheaper they are, it might be worth a mention at least.

The AGP version of the 6800 has better benchmarks out-of-the-box. It's core and memory are slower, but it has more pipelines.

[QUOTE="ProudLarry"][QUOTE="powerman1990"]The 6800, when unlocked is almost as good as the X800 Pro I believe. I just bought one from New Egg for $189.powerman1990
Yeah, but if we get into unlocking pipes and overclocking, it's going to make a price guide like this a whole lot more complicated. I say, just stick with out of the box performance to determine the best cards.

The AGP version of the 6800 has better benchmarks out-of-the-box. It's core and memory are slower, but it has more pipelines.

Compared to what exactly? I'm not saying that the 6800 is a bad card, and doesn't warrant a mention (just look at one of my previous posts), I was just saying that getting into overclocking and such would needlessly make the thread a little too complicated. Especially for the people that this thread is aimed at. I really wasn't commenting on the card itself.

If you are forced to use PCI (not the express one) a BFG 5500 OC is the best I know of(really just a fast 5200).

Or if you are desperate, ebay. I've seen ATI 9200's for $1.50
