I am gonna order custom stands for my rear speakers and was wondering what height should I choose?

My front side speakers are slightly below my ear but since they are upward firing so it's not an issue. My center speaker is slightly above my ear.

So I was thinking of 3 choices for the rear speakers,

1. At the same level as the front side speakers?

2. At ear level?

3. A little above ear level like the center speaker?

The rear speakers are upward firing as well btw.

Hmm, a lot of factors can come into play here, such as room size, angle of speakers, listening height and possible obstacles (back of couch). Can you tell us a little more about your room setup, and model of speakers?

I think a picture will best explain things here..:)

Speakers are logitech X-530. This is an older pic, right now I have placed the back speakers much closer to the chair. But since they are so below my ears, they dont do much especially the one on the corner as it is even lower than the other.

I did an experiment with putting lots of books on the table to make the speakers taller and that was much better.

Bear in mind I might upgrade the chair to one with a huge headrest very soon so my head wont be exposed from the back anymore.

I used to have a pair of speakers similar to the X530s. I got extension wires and attached them to the ceiling, aiming towards my chair. Best to have at ear height I believe

Slightly above ear height (though aiming straight, not angled)

I keep mine at ear level, just to make sure that I can hear footsteps behind me :)

What kind of soundcard do you have? Creative X-Fi soundcards have a 3D envelopment option (CMSS-3D) that allows you to make the rear speakers louder..

CMSS-3D is only for left and right channels. It doesn't affect the volume of the rear speakers with their own source. They do have an option to individually increase the volume of each speaker though.

I finally found the article I was looking for:

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-sfQjrbLzccT/learn/learningcenter/home/speaker_placement.html

This is a pretty comprehensive, well-explained guide to speaker placement. In the end, though, you should place them where they sound best to you. I hope this helps, and you enjoy your new speakers; I know you went through a bit of agony to get them!

Ah, so it's a virtual surround option? I took a look and saw the option to increase the envelopment from front to rear and assumed that it worked in 3D environments too =\

Say if you were playing 2 channel music, you can have it focus more on the rear channel. instead of the fronts. I have mine set as stereo surround (backs the same as fronts and spread across center/sub) and focused a bit more towards front. The half-way mark makes it focus too much in the rears.

Yes I know a poor man's surround setup but still I am loving the positional audio in games. :)

If you can calibrate each speaker then you can essentially put them wherever as long as you are able to compensate for the difference in distance from your ears. Ideally you want all speakers at ear level and a even distance away from listener.

I have mine just above ear level. They are mouted on the wall above the couch, and I needed to make them higher so people wouldn't bump into them with their heads. Sounds great. And btw, if you have a modern receiver with self-calibration technology, you can put them wherever you please and the unit will make all the adjustments to ensure the best sound.
