What are you trying to make?

3ds Max is good for modeling but you can't make a full game inside it. If you want a basic rundown or at least a starting point check out UT2K4...it came with video tutorials dealing with everything from modeling, level designs, texture work, etc.

Or check out the assorted HL2 mod sites and official info dealing with HL2's editor...lotta info on what tools people use to make eveything from custom levels and skins to full on mods.

Now if you want to make your own game from scratch...well their are tons of resources for that ranging from flash based games to the XNA stuff M$ deals in and your indie game makers stuff.

I would start with modding first, to get used to it. Source is EXTREMELY good for modding. Learn programing, scripting, coding etc. Or use Tequila_Zaire's advice. ;)

First you must learn to program in a simple language like c or java. If you want to create a serious game i suggest learning an Object oriented language like C++. First don't start from scrach like someone here said, it is just plain stupid. You can download the DirectX's sdk from Microsoft's website or openGL. In addition you will need a good compiler, I suggest .NET. Finally 3d models can be done by Maya or 3dsmax.

You sounds like Java isn't an object oriented language, but it is, and Java uses almost the same coding language as C++

For 3D modelling, try MilkShape 3D. It's very cheap one.

There are actually engines you can download for free or buy for a minimal price that allow you to make games without much knowledge of coding, or any for certain ones.

content creation is a major part of any game, and you can create the models (character, environment, weapons, etc.), effects, rigging & animation with the 3dsmax you have already.  learn to use photoshop as well for texturing.  you sound like you want to be a 3d artist.  if programming sounds out-of-reach for you, max is a great place to start just to learn the basics of what goes into creating a game.
