Well clear sky does technically happen first, it's more combat oriented than the others, I think it's a good starting place. Buggier than the other two though.

The order of release is Shadow of Chernobyl > Clear Skies > Call of Pripyat. The Order of the events is Clear Sky > Chernobyl > Pripyat. So starting with Clear Sky wouldn't hurt anything, but only make it to where you understand whats happening in SoC. Cool thing starting with SoC then playing CS, you get the AH HA moment as you find out new information. I would start with SoC.

I dont know about starting with Clear Sky... it's often regarded as the worst in the series and might not make a good first impression for the series. Its buggier, more difficult, and alot less atmospheric than the other two. Id say either start with Shadow of Chernobyl or Call Of Pripyat. If you like those, then go for Clear Sky.

Call of Pripyat is the best of the series, then Shadow of Chernobyl. Clear Skies was a bit of a disappointment IMO.

Word of advice: create as many separate saves as humanly possible, especially for the first two games. Save-game corruption was an infrequent but existing problem with those games. I learnt my lesson the hard way by relying on only quicksave and autosave. Aside from that precaution the games are quite enjoyable.

Clear Sky actually works well with the complete mod and looks insanely good, so go with that then do SoC then CoP

My vote goes to Shadow of Chernobyl. But when you do play them, be sure to pick up the Complete 2009 mod for each of them. They take a broken, buggy series that has the potential to be one of the greatest out there, and bring them to that potential. Then, SoC takes a bit to get started. So be patient and play for a few hours before passing judgement, and allow yourself to be swept away into it's oceans of atmosphere.

Clear Sky is generally regarded to be the worst game in the series, essentially the Devil May Cry 2 of STALKER if you will. Even GSC Gameworld seems to agree with that considering that they never package CS in with the other games when doing bundle sales on Steam or other DD services. The best game to start out with is SoC. It introduces you to the world of STALKER and the gameplay and is just as good as CoP (some would say better, some would say worse, it's down to personal taste). Make sure to play it with the Complete mod so you get a lot of bugs fixed and much nicer graphics. Then after you're done with that game play CoP as it's the other great title in the series (it doesn't needs mods either). If you finish both games and still want more THEN get CS.

SoC then CoP, and if you still aren't tired of STALKER by then, try out CS.

Starting with Clear Sky wouldn't be a terrible thing, but you'd miss those revelations that you'd get by playing it after SoC. Just make sure you download the Complete mod for each one as you get them. Drastically improves the games.

SoC with Complete. Then. CoP with Complete. If you really enjoyed them CS with Complete. If you would like to replay them, then checkout alternative mods like LURK.
