I have an Intel C2D E6420. Originally 2.13 ghz, I have it set at 2.4 ghz. However, CPU-Z is acting strangely and telling me it's only at 1.8 ghz. When I take the OC off it jumps from 1.6 ghz to 2.1 ghz for a second. What is causing this strange behaviour? Is my CPU messed up? Did I OC it wrong?

Or you left Speedstep on, which underclocks your processor while not in use.

What is this?

Dumbed down version: Lowers the clock speed of CPU to save power and generate less heat.

Full version: Click the link i gave you.

That's the same thing that Rayvin was saying, other then in the power settings in Windows, you can also disable it in the BIOS, it'll probably be in the same area as were you overclock the CPU (or at least it was on my Mobo).

That being said, it doesn't do any harm to keep it on.

So I just disable speed step and my problems fixed? I disabled it but it's still doing the problem with CPU-Z.

Disable it in your BIOS, not via a program in Windows.

I did go into my BIOS. I'll check again just to make sure it didn't reset or something weird.

Okay. I checked. It's disabled in BIOS. I started Company of Heroes in Skirmish mode and it's still at 1.8 ghz.

Bump?

Please don't stop! Is there any other suggestions? Could my overclock have damaged the CPU if I didn't disable or enable somethings? Like Vanderpool technology? Or some other setting?

That's because you most likely minimised CoH to view CPU-Z, right?

RUn CPU-Z in the background and run a stress tester like SuperPi.

Okay thanks. It goes up to 2.4 ghz when I'm calculating the Pi stuff. But why didn't it do this before? It always used to be at 2.4 ghz. Could this be a reason my games experience slowdowns?

I'd say unlikely, as the whole premise behind speedstep is that it ramps up as required, so if it wa a slowdown, it'd be for only a second or so. Unless of course the CPU usage went up and down, causing it to go from 2.4 to 1.8 repeatedly.

No, this is NOT causing you the slowdowns. Speedstep is a good feature that saves power when your processor is idle. Disabling it makes your computer eat more energy just so its running at full speed when idle. What good does that do? Just leave it alone, your slowdowns are more than likely related to your graphics card or some other component.

Just leave it like that. When a program starts it will go back to 2.13GHz
