[QUOTE="Johnny_Rock"]Well, to flip the coin, why do you say that Halo and GOW aren't good games? I had a lot of fun with GOW combat mechanics. It was a good looking game with an interesting story and superb sound effects and music, which I always find as key to building mood. Duck and cover made it, if not innovative, different from the pack.

Lots of people can't stand Gears, mostly because of its cover mechanic which literally forces the player into an extremely repetitive and extremely limited cover/fire/advance/cover/repeat formula. Now, sure, all games are pretty repetitive, but Gears is literally formulaic - every firefight will play out in more or less exactly the same way.
Some people just find that incredibly boring - I certainly do. What's more, it has a terrible story and awful storytelling, and while these are hardly major flaws given the genre, they definitely don't help.
Take a typical shooter, I can choose where to go and I can tailor my approach and my attack to suit my enemies, or simply to pander to a whim - Gears is all about shoehorning the player into a particular styIe, and personally I think that very notion is contrary to the spirit of PC gaming.
I consider Gears the archetypal console game - limited and restricting. Hell, you can't even load up old saves and replay your favourite parts because of the ludicrous save system (unless you can delete/move old saves into tricking the checkpoint system? That seems like a hassle). The only part of the game that impresses me is the visuals, and even they are far overshadowed by Crysis.
And after all of that... I still like Gears. You misread my post... I wasn't trying to convert anyone to like Gears. I honestly don't care what anyone plays. But he called me on my own opinion... which isn't going to happen.
