Alright, this is my system

3.0 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo E8400

2 GB DDR2800 4-4-4-12 Latency

1280x1024 Monitor.

Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit

So I was thinking of buying a 1GB HD4870, but would a 512 MB HD4870 work on this kind of resolution? Because from what I've gathered, More memory only helps out on really high resolution, like 1900x1200.

But then again, i would like to enable Anti Aliasing.

So should I go with teh 1GB or 512MB HD4870?

How about something that's, ya know, within my budget? I've seen benchmarks and both of these cards play crisis very well, and I'm getting one or the other so my question is: Should I spend an extra 30$ on the extra 512MB of memory?

all the reviews i've read say that those extra 3 or 4 frames per second will not make a difference, and the OCing will not make the difference between enabling and disabling the Anti-aliasing.

IMO - are you really that interested in making Crysis ur game of choice? I mean - I agree it's nice to have a rig that can play Crysis at full - a great benchmark. But IMO - Crysis isnt all that great to have to crank out the extra dollars if u cant afford it. My 8800gt still cranks out all the latest games at 1900x1200res - Even crysis - granted i have to tweak the game/naaa-I just uninstall and replace it with COD4 !!

At that resolution I doubt you would really need to enable AA, I used to play Crysis @ 1440x900 w/o any AA and it looked fine to me and allowed me to get higher framerates from my GTX 260

I honestly dont think theres any card that can max out crysis with AA and maintain a smooth frame-rate throughout. Now i personally enjoyed Crysis, but its not worth spending large amount and the effort just to run the game at fullm Once you complete it then thats it, you ve seen it all

get the 4890 for crysis it will max it out at 1680x1050 so anything less it will also. but the 4890 would be your best choice, I know I have tried alot of cards. the 4890 is a great card in many areas. anything less and you won't max crysis.

yeah, well its other DX10 games. Crysis is just a measuring stick.

But I think if I got more RAM it would be perfect. Sadly that would cost a lot more than just getting extra ram sticks. I'd have to shovel out nearly 200$ for a 64-bit OS

Oh yeah, I could tell the difference too even at 1440x900, but it didn't make the game experience any better or more real for me or anything...all it did was drop my framerates :P

4870 (512) - $135 - 95 FPS (FEAR 2, 1680 x 1050, 4 AA)

4870 (1 Gb) - $160 - 97 FPS

4890 (1 Gb) - $200 - 107 FPS

From here.

4870 (512) is tough to beat for the money. I can't see spending $25 for a few FPS for the 4870 (1 Gb) or 48% more for a 4890 for a 13% gain in FPS.

far cry 2 was awful, i bought it at launch and it was the most empty game world i've ever seen (i mean WHO CARES if its 50 sq km's in area, theres nothing in it at all, just people wanting to kill you), gameplay is repetitive to the max and the story is horrendous. it forced me to review the thing to warn everyone else, it was that bad.

It's true though :| We're using the words "maxed out" - and that's something the 4870 can't do for Crysis yet, even on the i7 enthusiast testbeds in the labs. If it can't do it there, it's certainly not going to on a far-slower Core2Duo setup... that's not to say the 4870 is a bad card, but it's showing its age. The DX11 cards coming out are looking more and more impressive.

*facepalm*

The question I'm asking is a very specific question with only two answers: Either get the extra headroom with 1GB HD4870 or save a few dollars and get a 512MB HD4870

"Get the HD4890" isn't among those answers.

have to agree. crysis was also poor. Nowadays you can pick those games up for a cheap price. Sometimes it is better to wait for a game to drop price.
