Yesterday it was $15 on steam, so I bought it on a semi-impulse. I kept hearing hype about it around the time it came out, and I watched the video review and liked what i saw.

But now, 2 hours and a bit into the game (I recently got the crossbow), I don't see what all the fuss was about. It's an FPS, plain and simple. I heard people call it borderlands+fallout... that's BS. There are no RPG elements, unless you count talking to NPCs and having a basic inventory system.

The graphics are 'okay' as long as you keep your distance. Every texture up close looks like a pre-2000 game. The vehicle physics are at the same level of mario kart, the environment physics are nonexistent (shooting a skull dangling from a rope does nothing beyond emitting a puff of dust).

On the upside: the sounds are good, conversations are with NPCs are lively, vehicle racing/shooting is entertatining, shooting and moving feels solid. By far the strongest point I can come up with for this game is the enemies' movements though... it's F'n brilliant - the way shooting someone in the shoulder make them spin around and stumble around for support, headshotting someone knocks them back flat on the ground, the way mutants perform crazy acrobatics while evading your shots... endlessly entertaining and satisfying. Also, the game runs smoothly; some rare texture pop-ins are the worst flaw I've seen.

But, overall, I'm not impressed.. It's an entertaining game, an okay game, but shallow. So, what was all the hype about? Am I talking to soon, perhaps? I'll keep playing of course, hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised later into the game...

I never expected it to be anything other then a solid shooter considering the developer, what surprised me was that if they one day decide to do it, then they can make a pretty good racing game. As far as RPG's go, while some elements were there, they're still walking around in the kiddie pool within that field, but with some focus and help then they could probably pull of a good RPG game aswell down the line. It's a solid Shooter and a good racing game, not so great on the story aspect but Id software hasn't been focusing on very deep stories much within their games.

^, it's terrible at 'racing', 1 gear, bad physics(or rather, far too shallow), cannot drift... basically blasphemy in terms of racing.

However, good shooter, that's it, nothing else means anything, damn shame, but it's to be expected by id, hopefully they'll learn from this and do better in the future. It was their first try to make story matter.. failed miserably, but they tried...

---

Hype was probably about it just being an id game, and people expecting far too much out of it.

And the 'physics' like shooting the skull, it's 'cause it's a static object, not dynamic, I'm sure it's physics are 'fine' in the engine, just Rage had almost no dynamic light or objects in it.. damn consoles.

I've been thinking about Rage for some time... Are the shooting mechanics alone enough to warrant a purchase?

What i'd like to know is why is the game is so damn big. Like 20-25gigs. Skyrim looks great and its 6gigs. What stopped me from buying so far since i have limits where i live.

I heard it is because of Carmack's "megatextures". Strangely, players aren't seeing those ultra detailed textures.

MasterYevon

I haven't played the game, but the fuss I was hearing about on the forums was not about how great it is, but about how many problems people were having. When I finally get it, it's going to be retail. 20-25 GB is a ton for a 10 hour campaign.

'Cause people are morons and can't tell the word 'megatexture' doesn't mean super high dpi picture, it's just a big ass image file. It's low detail per square inch; though completely unique detail in a whole game world.

He never said it was going to be 'ultra detailed' per square inch, if you watch him at QuakeCon, he even talks about it's flaws, like railings 'n such, basically, it's fine with low surface area per part of megatexture, but when you increase that surface area, it destroies quality. Like if you have a box with a can on top of it, it's ~3x more surface area than the tile would normally be texturing.

Tech isn't implimented perfectly and has limitations, may never even be perfectly viable.

I don't think many people thought rage was good. They should pay $15 to people who play it.

On pc Rage looks very good with large texture cache.

i like the post-apocalypse setting , but still i think Bulletstorm was better overall.

I do. Name a better shooter this year, or better levels than Jackal Canyon.

As for the graphics, a cIassic case of people not seeing the forest for the trees.

The only thing I can say truly bothers me about Rage is the way it ends. A short, repetetive final level, no awesome boss battle and a 30 second ending cutscene. Very, very lame. But I do like going around and doing all the side quests, and the racing is pretty fun. Looking forward to Rage 2, though. Maybe they'll make the ending better.

Actually, you can find textures that look like this, with ease in Rage.

But aside from the horrible close up textures, the game generally looks about this good.

All the positive fuss you are talking about was pre-release. All the negative fuss was within the first few weeks after release. Honestly, the positives and negatives have been extensively talked about to the point that you should know what you are getting when picking up this game. I liked the game, but I also agree it wasn't without its share of dissapointments. $15 or less is an appropriate price point for this game.

I was thinking of getting Rage myself for $15 when it was $15 on sale at Steam recently.

Though I was trying to choose between it and Hard Reset. In the end I went with Hard Reset because it was $5 compared to $15. And due to the setting of the game, I was leaning more towards it anyway.

That being said, come Spring Equinox (or Summer Solstice) sales from Steam, I will prolly pick up Rage, and it will prolly be $12 or less at that point.

What are you people on about? Rage had a great critical reception and most people who played it loved it. Don't think I've seen more satisfying shooting in any game.

It was overhyped, but it is still a pretty solid shooter overall. Racing mp was nothing great, but I found some fun in it for awhile. To me it is worth $15.

Well, you're just wrong about that, it's shooting mechanics are some of the best in the genre.

The new engine looks good, but the "unique textures" stuff was just stupid. It made the game unnecessarily huge. Some textures could easily be repeated and utilized in clever ways. And the story just doesn't do the animations nor the setting any favors.
