Please, no one word answers, but I'd really like to discuss which game gave the best frightening experience and explaining why it was.

doom3 was much more scarier due to the environment and the great ambient sound effects...
it must be some kind of misunderstanding that everyone thinks fear is scary (must be its title), its just a run & gun shooter with slow motion effects, where u fight commandos and mercenaries (which gets repetitive as hell...). ok its got some scripted scenes, where alma and fettel shows up and talks some crap...
those cloaked ninjas were a bit scary, with they'd put more of them in the game...
i would say Doom 3, but because of the storyline more than anything else. you're isolated on an unfamiliar planet, fighting against strange creatures.
FEAR was a great game, but since it took place in a city, and your character is part of a team, i always had the idea in the back of my mind that it didn't really matter that much of i succeeded on my mission.
i suppose i tend to prefer games where you are alone in the fight.
that's probably why i still like Unreal after all these years. you're thrown onto a foreign planet all by yourself, and you have to fight for your survival. kind of a simple concept, but it works for me.
Probably Doom 3 was worse for my nerves. Considering the stupid fact that you can't use the flashlight when using a weapon so you will be constantly switching between them because light is sooo overrated; that I haven't finished any of them, yet, but gone through them quite a bit; FEAR seems to put the "scary" parts together and put some notice mark before them *cough*static*cough* while Doom 3 seems to keep the pace even though in the first moment you know where the enemies are going to be (after that you just highly expect where they probably are); then I'd have to say that Doom 3 was better in that aspect.
It seems that FEAR is more action based and Doom 3 is more unnerving, at least as far as I have experienced.
Anyway, I'll sometime get the patience and time required to finish them off, maybe FEAR gets the killing blow on my nerves in the end.
The scariest thing about Doom 3 was when it blew up my PSU. Was convinced my PC was possessed for a few weeks later.
FEAR had some nice features to it, and unlike Doom was a little less predictable (it helped I hadn't heard anything about the psychological element prior to playing it)
If you want a real scary gaming experience, try playing Simcity with the lights off and the sound really really really loud.
Doom 3. I had to actually turn the sound down to finish that game :P
F.E.A.R. was definitely the better game overall IMO, and more intriguing. But Doom 3 was "scarier", it bothered me more, F.E.A.R. was cool.
I played Doom 3 first, maybe that also made a difference.
For me personally, Doom 3 was more scarier.
Environments, the atmosphere, the sound... playing Doom 3 at 2 AM, in complete darkens with good headphones was one time experience that only Alien VS Predators 2 did for me ^_^
FEAR is no cake walk either, it has very good environmental creepiness, not as much as scary but very creepy. The only thing that kept me on the edge was a little girl sudden appearance when you don't expect it.
Doom 3 for me. The atmosphere really got to me in that game with all the ambient sounds of machinery. I think not having any music during game play added to the atmosphere too. Sometimes it would be quite except for the low humming of a piece of machinery on the far side of the room and I'd really get the feeling that my character was all alone. It really made it feel like a horror experience more than an action experience like FEAR.
