when the 8800GT came out, there was a lot of talk about it. it was pretty much unanimously regarded as a very good card for the money. if you look at Valve's Steam hardware survey today, you can see the 8800GT is still the most used DX10 card.

what i'm wondering is, what made this card so popular? i would like to buy the 8800GT of the DX11 generation, but how will i know what card is it?

When the 8 series came out the 8800GTX was regarded as the big boy and everyone wanted one but couldnt afford one...about a year later (iam guessing that time frame) the 8800GT was released and offered pretty much the 8800GTX performance for a LOT LOT LOT less money. It was just the thing that a lot of people were waiting for...a bargain!

The 8800GT is so popular because it gave great performance at a really good price. The DX11 equivalent probably won't come out till a year later like the 8800GT.

i found this on wikipedia:

GeForce 8

Released on November 8, 2006, the 8th generation GeForce (G80 originally) was the first ever GPU to fully support DirectX 10. Built on a brand new architecture, manufactured in 80 nm, it has a fully unified shader architecture. Originally just the 8800GTX, the GTS was released months into the product line's life, and it took nearly 6 months for mid-range and OEM/mainstream cards to be integrated into the 8-series. The Die-shrink down to 65 nm and a revision to the G80 design, codenamed G92, were implemented into the 8 series with the 8800GS, the 8800GT, and 8800GTS-512. First released on October 29, 2007, almost one whole year after the initial G80 release.

The GeForce 300 series is launching later this year. So if I had to guess I'd would say the GTX 360... if they make a 360 that is.

8800gt is not a card to buy, you will not have enough satisfaction playing crysis or crysis warhead... and new games later on...

go for at least gtx260 216 cores, ...or if you have more money to spend, get a gtx 275. for longer life span before touches the limitations of graphics

That is, If Crysis Warhead is your game of choice. With the exception of Crysis and GTA4 / My 8800gt is still holding strong wih all the latest games. I can still max the resolution of all the latest games and mostly max out the rest of the settings too w/o a lot of struggle. I bought the card about a month or 2 after the initial release and it still holds up strong! I'll probably upgrad around Xmas with the new GTX3xxx series or the 295 if the price drops by then.. X~

You say that now that those cards are out, but in late 2007, when my 8800 GT was one of the hottest cards on the market, it had the best price-to-performance ratio by far. Sure, if it was a more recent build, I would have definitely opted for one of those cards instead, but I don't think they're enough of an upgrade for current 8800 GT owners given the costs involved. I'd be much better off waiting for the 8800 GT price-to-performance equivalent of the DX11 generation instead-maybe then I'll be able to max out Crysis while never dipping below 60 FPS on a single card. (At least on 1280x720 or 1280x1024, with minimal or no AA.) Anyway, you'll know when the 8800 GT of the DX11 generation will be out because you'll be getting almost-top-of-the-line performance for roughly 250-275 US$ new-probably more than that as demand overwhelms supply. (I definitely remember how Newegg 8800 GT prices were quite inflated back in late 2007-just enough to go over budget. Hell, I also remember the massive Dell discounts that got so widespread on the Internet that Dell couldn't keep up with the demand; I jumped on it at first, but later cancelled my order since I wasn't going to wait that long to finish my build with a PCIe graphics card that didn't suck.)

One of my coworkers' husband is a Mobo engineer for Nvidia. I have been going through her to him, asking tons of questions about the new graphics cards. Most of the coming info is a secret. - Threre really is no way to predict the future of these cards unless Nvidia starts announcing thier upcoming products. All I've been told is that yes, the next Gen cards are coming and are worth the wait!!

The 8800GT is in my opinion, a legend among video cards...I mean it has just been THAT popular. Not to mention that it was basically the sole reason that Nvidia survived against the late ATi 3000 series release and the early release of the 4000 series. The 9000 series sure the hell didn't do any good for them.

Very kewl taht you mentioned Legend fo Vid Cards. The most recognizable cards in my mind - are teh VooDoo cards of old, and the 8800gt.

There's no way to tell.

This forum is making me regret my GTX 275 purchase -.-.

Oh well, DX11 cards probably won't be affordable/practically used till a year or so after release.

LOL - Everyone regrets thier Video Card purchase 3-6 months after they bought it. When I bought my 8800gt, I thought I should have waited, cause a couple weeks after the 8800gts came out, the the 9800gtx the GTX29Xs and so forth. OVerall though, any of these cards are great. Your card is too. Don't look back !! ! ;)

Personally i have NEVER regretted buying my 8800GT, the 8800GTS 512mb that followed was only a bit better.

good news is nowaday games are optimise for the 2 consoles and pc. even the cryengine 3. I'm sure capcom can do better with pc. but from their standpoint, they have to take care of their business for all the consoles... the quality of the pcgames won't go toofar from console quality. that makes our 8800gt still good for recent games.

bad news is we have to stuck with console quality games even we buy pc version... with the exception of crysis and crysis warhead and...those pc exclusive...!
