I've been looking into getting a 5.1/7.1 gaming headset with a mic, but I'm sure not what is a good brand. As of right now I'm using the Apple Ipod earpieces so I guess anything could be better. :P

I was looking at the LogitechG35 7.1 Channel Surround Sound Headset, but alsoCreative Labs Sound Blaster Arena Surround USB Gaming Headset.

Does anyone have different suggestions?

I've heard a lot of people say the G35's are pretty good. I haven't heard anything one way or the other about the Creative ones.

So after doing a bit more research I'm going to stray away from any USB 2.0 only connector headset since I want to be able to plug it into my X-fi card.

Now, I'm looking at theCreative Fatal1ty Professional Series Gaming Headset MKII, which seems like it would be perfect.

Audio Technicas plus a Zalman mic, no question/competition. You can choose a different headset if open-backed (which leaks sound while closed doesn't) isn't suited for you.

I have used both the HD555 and AD700 and recommend theSennheiser 555headphone paired with anASUS Xonar DG soundcard (Dolby Headphone + built-in headphone "amp"). The AD700 is noticeably better for positioning, but removing the foam on the HD555 should make the gap a little smaller. The AD700 is bass-anemic so some music and sound effects don't sound natural.

A good pair of headphones+separate mic. Gaming/"surround sound" headsets are unequivocally a waste of money.

Would it be worth the extra $50 for the Sennheiser HD595 for gaming/music? Or would theHD555do the job just as well? I'm no audiophile by any means, that's why I'm asking.

Just get the HD 555's. I'm using them right now, and I couldn't be happier with its sound quality. Besides, there's a mod that you can do to HD 555's that arguably make them sound very close to 595's.

Better yet, use the extra 50 bucks to get the Xonar DG, like a previous poster said. Not the best sound card, but it will allow you to get Dolby Headphone for simulated surround sound on your headphones, a built-in headphone amp to counteract the higher impedance that HD 555's have, and slightly better sound quality than your typical onboard sound chips.

No. Actually, the only difference in audio between the HD595 and HD555 is the foam that Sennheiser added to the HD555 to intentionally gimp it. They both use the same drivers. You may want to look into the newer versions of the two models with improved drivers, the HD558 and HD598 but I haven't read too much about them yet.

I agree with this. HD 555 + xonar DG = win.

Plantronics GameCom 367 Closed-Ear Gaming Headset -they are on sale at amazon for $24.88, 50% off the normal store/newegg price

Newegg has these same headphones for $48.25 shipped right now, so really its even more than 50% off MSRP price.

http://www.amazon.com/Plantronics-GameCom-Closed-Ear-Gaming-Headset/dp/B001E45XT4/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1294452467&sr=1-1

I picked one up, might not be the best headset out there but for that price I didnt wanna pass it up.

How much of a difference does removing the foam make? Is it a big gap between the 555s and 595s? I'm just a little paranoid about ripping apart my headphones if the gain is very minimal.

Got money over 100$? If so, go for Sennheiser PC-330 or PC-350.
