Just enough to get good sound. Less than $100 would be good, but whatever to get good quality.

I have the XFI Xtreme Music card. For just over 100 dollars at the time, I could hear a difference between it and onboard sound through some cheap headphones (KOSS).

You know, if you don't try out the high-end stuff, you'll never feel like it's necessary to get such perfect sound quality. I use onboard sound and I think it's just fine (maybe even great...or perfect). Sound cards aren't like video cards where you have to have one for decent quality. If I were you I'd skip the sound card as the headphones will work nicely alone. If you really really need that better-than-crystal-clear sound then go with one of the X-Fi sound cards as mentioned above.

The only difference between the Platinum and Fatal1ty is that the fatal1ty version has 64 MB onboard memory for sound files. However, practically no games use this (except bf2 and bf2142), and I would spend $20 on something else personally.

Correction; the elite pro also has X-RAM. But no app or game uses it.

dont get one yet, vista has rebuilt their sound system so if you plan on making a vista jump any time soon, know that no current cards are built for it yet. you still get sound, but no special effects or anything, and somegames have sound disabled alltogether.

Creative already released bèta drivers. MS isn't building a sound system themselves (well, I can't call the usual MS copy-paste code job from various year-long successfull 3rd party program authors a sound system...). It will be pretty much useless when the final drivers are released.
