they are pretty much the same so both camps are right and both are wrong at the same time about being better. Its an arguement that ends with "to each their own".

I personally prefer 720p, but 1080i does tend to look better on larger screens or TV's. 1080p is the best viewing quality though.

ah can someone actually explain the difference. i is for interlaced and p is for progressive. But only CRT screens are actually interlaced. So what is an lcd or plasma screen actually doing with an interlaced signal???

You are right, but LCD's can have interlaced signals also. The difference is basically image quality. With a 1080i TV, you are getting more pixels than the 720p TV, but with the 720p TV you are getting a progressive signal, which is better image quality then an interlaced signal. They are so alike that it would be almost impossible to tell the difference between he two, except on maybe a larger TV where the 1080i would have a higher pixel count (the image would not be so "fuzzy").

no clue what chandler is saying

every source (TV signal, DVD, etc.,) transmits patterns...many, many, patterns. Each pattern is broken down to lines...like lines on a paper. The first number you see is the amount of vertical lines that are avialable on the pattern. So for 1080 theres 1080 lines and for 720...720 lines. The "i" (interlaced) and the "p" (progressive) stand for the way the source has the pattern drawn. A progressive pattern is drawn with every line in sequence. An interlaced the pattern is drawn with every other line skipped.

LCD's and some PLasma's de-interlace the interlace signal in order to show them and there are a few ways of doing so. Sound confusing?...it is.

the 1080i is always better on rear projection tv's and huge LCD's(Define huge: i don't know ....it changes from time to time as LCD's snd plasmas tend to improve)

Generally 720p looks better for fast moving video, 1080i for slow moving video.

Yeah, on some LCDs and plasmas interlaced will give you ghosting effects. Since interlaced is not native to LCDs the signal has to be de-interlaced. Some LCDs might have better de-interlacing and fix that problem, but if you can do 720p or 1080p you would be better off. However, TV and movies propbably will still look ok at 1080i, its video games that can look kind of fuzzy. For instance, my samsung LCD looked terrible when I played oblivion in 1080i (washed out and blurry) but movies on blu-ray looked fine.

My TV supports both 720p and 1080i, I played gta 4 on 720p and 1080i but it seems better on 1080i.

Thanks for the replies to my query. Of course answers lead to more questions. Does anyone know how an LCD or Plasma de-interlaces the signal. My guess is it just loses say the lower/odd field and duplicates the top/even field thus effectively halving the resolution. which would explain any fuzzines. anything more than this would be too processor intensive to do realtime.

I do notice that text on my dad's plasma (playing foxtel) looks pretty dicky. pretty much like bad de-interlacing of an interlaced image.

I think i a Have an answer.

1080i has higher resolution but will result in flickering if you sit close to your Tv.

720p having resolution on the lower side, but will not flicker even if you are an inch closeto your Tv.

take this rule of the thumb. If you sit within 6-8 ft of your TV, the use 720p or else 1080i/

Note that your console will be more stressed under 1080i and willl heat more.It may result in seldom lag in gameplay.

Hope you find it helpful.

Asad was helpful, but the better answer is still the first one you got: what looks better to you.

I swore that Gears was better in 1080i but Halo 3 was better in 720p. You've got both. You know your personal decision is worth more than all of ours. Take a chance, make the choice yourself based on your own opinion. The two are so darn close that they give you both on every TV so that you can make this distinction yourself.

I read somewhere that Blu Raus are native 1080p so when you watch them if you don't have 1080p its will change 720p to 480p leaving 1080i looking a lot better for Blu Rays. As for gaming I feel 720 is better for games it just seems a tad sharper but thats my opinion.
