interesting thread
to answer the last question first, i see spore as really just an evolution of the tycoon game, only on a much larger scale - and while it may seem impossibly awesome, from what i've seen it's mostly just a load of minigames wrapped around some amazing procedural technology -a new genre? not really, more of a compilation of existing genres, represented as minigames... that's my take, anyway... maybe that in itself justifies a unique and originalgenre, but i doubt we'll see too many games falling into that particular pigeonhole... ever... that's what makes spore special, i guess - it's unique
as for what i'd like to see, i'd like to see more elements of other genres (and gameplay styles)merged into existing genres, not in such a way that it would create a new genre, but take escape from butcher bay as an example, it is totally untraditional compared with fps standards, we have a narrative determining drastic gameplay shifts, we've got exploration and roleplaying elements, we've got action, we've got stealth - it really transcends the genre labeling 'first person shooter' in my opinion, and it's one of the best gaming experiences i've ever had
i'd like to see that much more - a fps where you're not encountering enemy after enemy, a game where you put the gun down, and use other tools to navigate other problems in a coherent world with structure where not everyone is your enemy and different gameplay styles come into play and work together and play off eachother to create a dynamic and diverse experience where there are different solutions and routes to every obstacle... i guess what i'm thinking is, bloodlines meets grand theft auto meets escape from butcher bay
this concept could easily be applied to other genres, too, i just use fps as it is probably the easiest example to understand
I was playing a crappy game the other day that featured a wonderful action game but with semi-good strategy gameplay involved. I think that gamers are getting so good that just a standard FPS now is boring, now we need powerups, weapons we can customize, possibly android like enhancements to our character to jump higher shoot faster and the likes. I think that an FPS with strategy added in would be great, but what if we could add more to that, what if we could prepare our whole mission in a strategy mode, which we can come back to through out the game to change the strategy being played, spend time in FPS to control the action first hand, then grab a vehicle and hit up a wonderful driving simulation and then solve a few puzzles as well to let the story keep playing as they are resolved. What would you like to see? What you like not to see? Is there more room in our shelves for new genres? Is Spore going to be a new genre? When will the next big game come out?serieus
We need the good old fashioned badass RPGs that companies like Squaresoft brought to the world.
Not possible within the decade, but everyone wants -- True AI. With that the genres can blossom, because it'll be more than just gaming then, it'll be a holodeck experience (as AI doesn't only apply to humanoids and creatures, but environments too -- they can virtually live -- real weather patterns; real cause and effect with soil, trees, waterways, etc.).
But in the here and now, I would like more games that are hybrids like Deus Ex. A little FPS, a little RPG, a little stragedy, and a whole lot of exploration without a stopwatch or being pushed to finish NOW! If they're going to give us the Crysis experience, let gamers actually enjoy that experience, not race through it to kill something that'll vanish from the scene once shot up!
Oh also, I'd love...LOVE to see another Star Wars MMORPG...but done right. Something bigger than Warhammer or Warcraft or Guild Wars.
Always wanted to play Galaxies, but it just wasn't done right according to ... everyone? Also, I hate SoE. They screwed me and my credit card.
a military simulation with virtual life elements something between flashpoint and sims or something like stalker.
I think virtual life elements are needed in all games because you can't just tell your body hey don't get tired I'm in battlefield.
I wanted and hoped Starcraft 2 to reinvent the RTS gener, but from what i've seen so far... it's just not it...
I have always dreamed to play a game like starcraft in a fully 3d space where you can actually occupy a whole planet yourself. have your massive spaceships come out from no where like perhaps from the cloudy sky to unloaded your total war like numbers of tanks and armies in the mid-air to strike the other planet with oblivion or wow like of landscape.
lol, i don't care about the computer spec i just want a game like that...

What, like a World of Starcraft? It would be cool, if done right.
However my conclusion remains...I hate Blizzard. Their games are cool, but I hate them.
We need more games in the "Battlezone-genre"...I suppose you could call it the action-RTS hybrid.
Battlezone, for those that played the game, is a classic and even if you didnt like it, you cant deny the fact that its a good game. Building a base on some far away moon or planet, making some wingmen tanks and defenses, then assaulting the enmy base was so much fun. And best of all it was different! It played almost like a shooter/sim with the WASD controls, but it also had RTS components like building placement, resource collection, and commanding units.
This is a genre that has not been exploited as much as it should be. As far as I can recall, there have been only two more games: Battlezone 2, the sequal, and then a relatively unknown gem called Uprising iirc.
I would really like to see a near-future game based on this genre. Maybe you play a commander of a small militia after WWIII or something, and you go across the States or Europe and build bases, combat enemies, and eventually gain power and upgrades, etc. The possibilities are really endless as this genre could apply to any time period.

I am not a huge RTS gamer, but I have to say that Homeworld blew my mind, and I remember thinking, finally space RTS have truly gone 3D. I was all excited because I thought we would get more games like that, but it seems that RTS seems satisfied to remain the way it is. I had hoped SC2 would move in the direction of HW.
I agree with many people posting here that it's really tought to come up with a new genre. I guess our best bet is for developers/designers to innovate on current genres and FINALLY leave behind past/current influences so games start to have distinct differnces. I'm finding new games to get more and more repeating as the years are going by.
With the development of faster internet connections over the last few years, i strongly believe that the future of gaming lies on Multiplayer. I'm not talking just about MMO's but the multiplayer aspects of the games in general. I agree with one of the previous posters (forgive me for not remembering the name right now) who said that as games are released people are getting better and better at them, be it FPS/RTS/RPG you name it. I feel it's based due to the repeating nature of the games i mentioned earlier. I, by no means, say that there are not games that introduce new features to their respective genres. But my feeling is that most play the same but look different.
So for stating my "preference" like many did before me, i would like to see a MMORPG that finally escapes WoW's grasp. I'm not saying WoW is a bad game, on the contrary. I just don't understand why developers have to use the winning/profit making recipe over and over again. Look at the after-WoW MMOs, Vanguard, LOTRO (and more) have exactly the same feeling as WoW has. I guess that's why i'm playing Dungeons & Dragons Online right now, due to the huge difference in gameplay. And i feel i will be deffinetely play Tabula Rasa as soon as it hits the shelves. So to cut a long story short, my wish would definetelly be INNOVATIVE gaming, especially in the MMO genre.
