Just curious what you guys would recommend for a new AGP GPU here? I'm just looking to upgrade my PC for right now (do plan on building a new one in around a year or two with PCi....finally) and after bumping my RAM up to 2.5GB, it's now time to take my old Radeon x800 and give it the old boot.

Thank you in advanced for any and all suggestions. :)

mm /agree hd 3850 does very well however it has issues with its drivers and sometime certain makes cant chug out consistent fps at stupid large resolutions (such as one would fine on a 30"+ lcd tv.

Honestly, if I were you I would just keep the X800. You payed damn good money for it, remember? :P My last system was an AMD64 3500+ with an X850 Pro and I was in the same boat as you last year. I was in denial that AGP was truly dead and was looking for a good DX10 replacement for my X850. I couldn't find any AGP cards that cost more than $150. But I went ahead and bought an X1200 (or whatever) and figured since it had more memory and a better model number that it would be better, regardless of the price. Big mistake...! That card f*****g sucked! Upgrade to PCIe man, don't waste your money until then. :]

this would be because the x1200 is a BOTTOM of the x1000 series pile man had you bought an x 1800, 1900 or 1950 id see reason to complain but you did not and are therefore the fool in this case. you DOWNGRADED by alot and anyone who knows a little about the way card families work would see that the hd 3850 or 3650 are solid cards still (there not gtx 295 but who really NEEDS ONE..seriously).

well i wouldnt be calm if you have used a 3850 you would know that it can handlefallout 3 and deadspace on hgih - highest which is a pretty good step forward from an x800 though going to PCI express x16 or x16 2.0 would be nice its still not THAT bad same goes for a pci gpu card slot which still has some life in it (in the form of a 9500gt)

It's actually a pretty common problem: lots of people have access to old, otherwise-useful Pentium 4-type computers with AGP. Not great for cutting edge gaming, but decent as media servers and for old favourite game titles. Sadly, there are few options for upgrade. Nvidia appears to have abandoned AGP. At present it boils down to the ATI 3650 and ATI 3850. Both are decent performers and would be nice upgrades, taking into consideration the old bus. The 3850 has better performance but is unreasonably overpriced in my opinion. The 3650 has good performance and sits at a slightly more reasonable pricepoint. (Remember, you are investing in old technology). Essentially, upgrading to a PCI-E motherboard is the best investment, but if you're intent on buying one last videocard for your old AGP P4, those are your options.

I know many of you will think I'm foolish for doing this, but I went with the HD3850. The fact remains that I'm not really up to putting together a new computer just yet. As it is, my PC is keeping me happy and this upgrade will work for me for at least 2 more years. I don't need to have the best rig in town. All I need is a system that can at least run current games. :)
