The moment Shogun 2 was released the development team at CA apparently had already begun working on the next TW.
What do you think it is going to be?
What would you personally like to be made?

What I think it will be: Rome.

What I'd like it to be: Medieval, or something from an established universe like Warhammer or Star Wars.

Those are definitely viable, however, perhaps China? Currently that would be uncharted territory for them, something new.

Total War: Africa

Clan warfare at its peak, and all high tier units feature men wielding sticks.

Total War should make new stuff instead of Rome/Medieval/Shogun.

Well, they've pretty much covered Europe, the American Colonies and Japan. I think an important Chinese dynasty would be fitting for a new Total War game.

I just hope it takes place in an era where melee combat is king. I didn't like Empire much, but the next standalone expansion for Shogun 2 looks amazing. I also wouldn't mind a Rome 2 or even a Medieval 3.

How is Shogun 2? I've been wanting to see what people thought of it before I bought the game.

I think they're trying to make the most of their success with Shogun 2 and I dont blame them. They are no doubt working on new title but I dont know where they would go. I know that Rome 2 is popular with the fans so I have a feeling they may be going there. Makes sense for them to go back and get things right that they may not have gotten right before.

They need to create a whle new concept for TW now.

1) Customisable troops - uniforms, weapons

2) Customisable environment, landmasses, terrain, buildings

3) Customisable campaigns, objectives

4) Cusomisable eras i.e Romans with spears and Guns or Samurai with blades and jetpacks

5) The ability to upload and share maps/concepts

Although I love TW, the reskinning mostly and refinning of the game is making it become a little tired and repeatative. I want something fresh

Rome 2. Please be Rome 2.

A Three Kingdoms Total War would be cool but they just did an Asian setting.

I would like a Greece Total War, with Spartans and Trojans all that great stuff.

I personally do not think I would buy a TW game if it was space or like fantasy stuff.

They will probably do something boring like Rome 2. I would prefer something like Mongol: Total War on the steppes of Central Asia or something about the Warring States period in China.

Empire was a fresh change of pace, although I think the scope of the game really got out of hand and led to the buggy mess that it became.

Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai is in progress, and has some VERY cool and new features. Integrated land/sea battles, bombardment from sea, port sieges, player build railroads to speed troop movement, first person control of some units and so on.

As for the next full game I'd love a Rome 2, BUT it would have to retain the faction diversity of the original and not have copy/paste armies like Empire/Napoleon/Shogun 2.

I wouldn't mind a Rome 2. I never played the first one, so I would welcome it. I just hope it stays with good ol' swords, bows, cavalry, and limited gunpowder though. I get tired of people on the Total War forums demanding a WW1 or a WW2 Total War.

I know it won't happen, but I'm tired of the conventional themes, Shogun really needed a remake it was ancient, but that's where it should stop imo.

I'd really like to see a TW in Africa.

People demanding a WWII Total War or a more "modern" Total War don't get it.

Total War has always been about formations, and that is what gives the game its sense of scale without being terribly difficult to control. Imagine commanding more than several dozen tanks for a battle or something. The pathfinding would be horrendous.

That's the biggest flaw they need to overcome to make TW more than it was and still is, in a way, CA is too lazy with TW, it needs more, it needs to change, they've been giving the same formula since the first game. Personally I'm tired of flat battlefields with a few random buildings that don't fit with the map for more than 75% or so, it needs more, it needs vertical battles. Imagine a TW game, with cowboys and Indians, with more to it than just a flat square with random trees and some grass, vertical battles in canyons, more diversity to the way you fight, more diversity to gameplay, game mods, having to go through canyons and cover carriages from the cliffs and more fun and varied stuff like that (not just "Oh hi, I have city, you attack?", "Oh you have city, I attack" and finally "me army, you army, we go war"), better crafted cities, cities that aren't just some random walls applied on an almost randomly created almost flat surface that they made and still make in TW games. Right now this is the kind of TW game I dream of, but it's impossible, because it's nothing like any "lazy" TW CA made, it needs a lot of work,

yeah, i agree. they need to change it up. Its an awesome series, but it needs more intresting encounters and maybe even more depth with the campaign map. i would love a deeper agent system.

I'd say otherwise. They stick to a formula and work within that framework that makes their game. They tried a massive change, with huge ambitions in the form of Empire TW, and it for most of the part, was generally regarded as disappointing, due to crushing itself under its own weight, in carrying the issues that come with radical change. Shogun 2 was the game CA needed to make; something far more refined, with a much stronger direct vision; and as a result it did very, very well. That was a bold move, instead of running with the content introduced in Empire and Napoleon; not many studios take a large step backwards in order to move forwards. Otherwise the new expansion seems to be doing that shake up under the usual structure. It's introducing asymmetrical gameplay, with feudal meets firepower, which is something pretty racially different to the outright one or the other that TW games have approached. I can agree with maps though; terrain can shape battles, but there's not much in the way of terrain advantage dictating a battle due to general smarts. Problem is a.i. is extremely difficult to pull off, but we do have mods to help out at least.

Total War needs the navigation AI from Supreme Commander 2. Look at this! Imagine how AWESOME the battles of TW would be with that AI. Man, in vanilla Empire they can't even move in a straight line.

That's awesome. Although the ai pathfinding isn't as annoying in TW games as Warcraft/Starcraft games.
