What's so great about a 8800GT?

I just bought a 9400GT for 60 bucks at the store, but I still hear people talking about an 8800GT like it's the best! Did I get the wrong card???

I can play crysis maxxed out with no aa and motion bluron dx10 with some acceptable framerates.

A 880GT = 9800GT

the 8800GT isn't the best

but it's certainly a lot better than the 9400GT, which is a poor card for games.

ati it's not so bad, at least they don't rebrand old cards like the 9800gt/8800gt.......which they almost rebranded as a 240gts

With ati at least you know for sure that a 4870 is faster than a 4850 and slower than a 4890. Nvidia starts messing about with gs, gts, gt, gso, gtx, wtf edition, ultra

The 8800gt was the first affordable high end video card. I will not change mine out for at least another 2 years, it runs very fast, it has a low temperature (because of my aftermarket heatsink combo), and it can do high settings quickly.

Anyway, back on topic. Yes, a 8800GT beats the 9400GT by a lot. I'm affraid you got screwed over. The 9400GT has a 128 bit memory bus width and the 8800GT has 256 bit, which is better. Also, the 8800GT has higher GPU and memory clocks.

What lured e was on the box it has a picture of some dude playing "Grid" on the back. I just downloaded and played the demo for GRID, and this card is no BS, I think I might keep it, also, what if xfx??

Good luck playing games like Crysis, CoD-WaW, Far Cry 2, Fallout 3 and other newer one's. You'll most likely regret keeping that GPU, just saying. ;)

If you're on some kinda budget, then by all means, keep it, but don't expect too much from it. I've known some people that try to justify there low end hardware to make it look good, it's all biast cause they don't wanna look bad. 8)

8800GT is a lot better than the 9400GT. The equivalent 9*** series to the is 9800GT

If you want cheap card that performs from the 9*** series then get the 9600GT that is almost as good as 8800GT in many games.

I have an 8800GT in my PC. I bought it for about $250 almost 2 years ago. Even though the price is now around $120, I still don't regret buying it when I did. I actually might get another if I can find a damn SLI bridge.

When I purchased my new components for my current rig, the 8800GT had just come out. One of those babies matched the 8800GTX's, at the time, it was for for half the cost, so I swaped from originally planning on one 8800GTX to two 8800GT's in SLi. When I placed them into my rig the performance was outstanding and seriously high end stuff for exceptionally price to performance value. Hence, the 8800GT is one of the most fond cards for it's time. :) It's time is over however, and, if I was going to purchase another relative bang for the buck card, I'd go for a HD 4770 512MB.-CheeseEater-

it was awesome performance for it's price back in xmas 2007 and it can still max out almost every game18 months later. 8800gt = 9800gt still a great mid range card, the 9800gt is a really good low cost option. 9400gt is not even in the same class as a 8800gt. it's not even as fast as a 8600gt 9400gt = video not gaming. you just have to ignore the first number and look at the second ie 2/4/6/8 is the important one. imprezawrx500

The first number is important too but in conjunction with the second number which generally shows the higher performance model in that series. You don't want people buying say a Nvidia 5800 6800 or 7800 cards these days.

I was working at a Fry's Electronics when the 8800GT came out, we were sold out of them for a few weeks. People were getting antsy about us not having them in to fill demand. The Radeon 3870 with GDDR4 was the same way too.

And for the topic creator, when comparing numbers, compare the second digit in the hundreds place to compare cards outside of series if it's pre-GTX/GTS series. Compare Nvidia cards to other Nvidia cards and ATI cards to ATI cards when using the numbering system.

Examples of capability;

Geforce 9600>8600>7600>6600. It can be very confusing, but the first number denotes the family of cards, the second number denotes it's position of power. The higher the second number the higher tier in capability in relevance to it's series. For example a Geforce 7600 is s stronger card than the 7300, but the 7600 is weaker than the 7800 which itself is weaker than the Geforce 7900. It's the same way with ATi cards, it's prudent to compare the second number after the series/first number, and not worry about comparing different cards in different series unless you know what you're doing. The higher numbers will represent the more powerful cards, the lower ones are of course the weaker graphics solutions.
