The ability to create an entire universe starting from a single cell, and it's gonna have so much mods for it, like, tons and tons of modability.
It only looks like a kids game if you want it to. It's also got graphics that look like that so it won't have insane sys. req.

If this is the same game I saw demonstrated bout 2 years ago - I was excited then because of the way you create a totally bizarre creature and the program works out how it will walk, be top heavy and sway etc. But now I think the supposed open endedness is probably about as open ended as oblivion or stalker. (both great games BTW) but how come every game seems to end in space with space ships? It seems like a fairly pre-determined path with a little bit of variation scope along the way.

its an MMO and apparently every MMO has hype behind it.jayjayman
Where the heck did you get that idea?
it looked stupid from the gameplay. looks like a childrens gameunrealplaya55
So you only play games that are realistic? And how was that stupid? You get to create life from scratch, customize their buildings, ships, etc. and terraform entire planets. If that's not genius then I don't know what is.

I doubt it, there's no way you can restrict anyone like that when the game is nothing but total and complete creative freedom, making a demo would be like putting the game up for free.

disclaimer: I'm not anti-spore - I am interested in it, but devil's advocate bits follow...
ok, you can have misgivings about a game before it's released, equally to saying it's going to be the greatest before it's released.
It was said it looked like a kids game (well not exactly those words) but in the demonstration video the early simple cell lifeform has big cute eyes - so it's not aimed at intellectual evolution.
I don't even think the concept is new, wasn't there a really old game called 'primordial' or something?

its not an mmo
So its a single player game?
Actually it is a Massive Single Player Online game. There was a pretty decent article in PC gamer about it this month. Ill sum up what they said MSO means. Pretty much everyone who plays can create new creatures, plantlife, and whatever you please then upload it to the spore database. Then when anyone starts a new planet they can download from the database whatever type of creatures they want to personalize their planet with. Its a pretty nifty concept imo. As far as the gameplay Imma wait for the demo cuz I don't really get the hype myself. Anyone who is interested though should read the article, it gets a lot more in depth about the gameplay mechanics than I did.
A friend of mine has been raving about spore for a good two or three years now, so I'm pretty well versed in why it's gotten the hype it has. Basically, it's unlike anything that's ever been done before. You create a creature, starting from a single-celled organism and working your way up through evolution, adding limbs, eyes, etc. Somehow the game will be able to figure out how your creation will work, and you can design buildings for them to live in, vehicles for them to move around in, and basically create the game yourself. It's revolutionary because there could theoretically be an unlimited amount of variation between species, yet the game will still be able to work.
It's also not an MMO, but eventually you will run into planets populated by creatures designed by other players. The game apparently saves all created species to a database, then randomly populates planets with them, updating them as their creator progresses through the game.
Personally I'm worried it'll take a few hours to get to the end, leaving no reason to continue. The game will be probably the most innovative and impressive achievement we've seen (from a technical standpoint), but those don't necessarily make for the most riveting experiences.

they are releasing the creture editor as a demo before the game is released

i think so - and i must say i was put off by the look of the thing - whichever way you spin it, it did look kiddish
anyway, what's new about creating life forms - have you ever met my friends? i made them... ;)
The complexity and style in the editor is completely new never been done before.
The demo will just be the creature editor were u can design ur creature and test it but u can't play it or anything.
with the mmo thin it is very obvious that it isn't, because it is not multilayer this would just be horrible. imagine if u just got to the tribe phase and some jerk with a huge intergalactic fleet came along and blew up ur planet. people think that it is mmo because it uses other players stuff.
as in the COMPUTER uses other ppl stuff
The ability to create your own creature in a game isn't new! it's a complete rip of ofthis
jasperrussell
Anyway that doesn't do anything exept drop and drag random moving parts onto a screen. this one will actualy analize what u have created and give it behaviurs ect... ect... so in other words ur wrong it is a new concept entirely.

I've never heard of that game but Spore has some vague similarites to an SNES game called Evo. That being said, games like Spore and Evo are so extremely rare so they're almost like brand new concepts.
The hype stems from the fact that it's a new game that does something new. Let's face it, for anything "new" that comes out into the market, it gets some sort of hype prior to release. On top of that, Will Wright who has been very succesful in creating games, is the creator of this game. That alone also adds some hype to the whole equation.

If you're looking to see what inspired the game (and not some 13 year old too young to remember the title) one could lookat SimEarth by the same author perhaps... For all intents and purposes, Spore is SimEarth 2. And like it's predecessor promises eons of gameplay.
This game looks amazing. I have been following videos and articles about it every sence it was announced. Finally, it has a set release date. I can not wait to play this game.
I think my all time favorite video of spore was when Robin Williams was playing the game. Haha.
Made me want the game even more!
:D
3. Its an MMO, every MMO is hyped.
Orakk
spore is NOT a MMO
Will wright is VERY clear on this and i don't know why everybody thinks it is!
it is a massive SINGLE player online game. You don't actually interact with anyone directly you just get to play, see and interact with there CREATURES and city ect...
