Whats so wrong with Runescape?

I am just puzzled on how many people bash Runescape every single day. I want to know why people bash Runescape so much.

Now before I start getting ripped to peices let me give some background on my MMO experiances.

I started with Runescape back a few years ago when I didn't have a gaming computer that could run anything better than Runescape. Also I lacked a credit card and an income to afford anything better. I was sick of playing crappy flash games and after about 300+ hours of Diablo 2 I was looking for something different. I really really wanted an MMORPG but I couldn't afford any. Luckly one of my friends showed me Runescape back when it was only 2d. I fell in love with the game because it was all I could play. I was a paying member until my seinor year in high school (im a junior in college). That is when I finally was playing lots of Halo 2 and other Xbox games.

Heres the kicker. The whole time I was playing I knew exactly what Runescape is. It is a very basic MMORPG which focus is on basic MMORPG gameplay. I knew the graphics were crap compared to games like WoW, I knew the gameplay was shallow and boring, I knew the world was filled with 7-13 year-olds, and I knew that there were much better games out there. Did I care? Absolutly not. I had nothing better. Runescape was the only game I could actually play with several of my friends at the same time and get a very similar feeling to playing a more advanced MMORPG without having to pay each month and on crappy computers.

Since then I have bought a decent laptop and built a gaming rig. So I was able quit Runescape, start WoW (quit after not being able to get into it), start Guild Wars (which I still play), and now currently live on Age of Conan and WWII Online.

Now I can't go back to Runescpae at all because it is so basic. But I don't understand why everybody bashes it. Everybody constantly calls it a shallow game for kids. That is because it is! It is a shallow game for kids! Did anybody ever think of that?

The game is clearly marked for a very young audience. The graphics, the gameplay, the dialog, every part of the game is made for kids. It is kind of a gateway MMO for other ones. Many Runescape players go on to bigger and better MMOs after a year or so of playing Runescape.

Nobody here is forced to play Runescape. Not many people over 18 here actually play Runescape over any other MMORPG. This is because the game is very simple and very boring. But to kids this is the prefect formula. Very easy to understand. Nothing at all is complicated. With a subscription there is a bit more depth, but nothing worth an 18+ person's time.

I just wish people would leave Runescape alone and realize that it is simpley a game for kids and for people who can't play other MMOs due to lack of funds, lack of a decent computer (which is becoming less of a case every year), and for people who just want something very simple.

I get the impression that Runescape is sort of like an in-joke with this industry. I am not saying it is bad but because of this reputation with people that you yourself have pointed out - it has become the subject of humour etc.

Having said that people are still entitled to speak their minds on games whether you agree with it or not. That is just the way it goes..

Well if you like the game as much as I think you do then I am sure you can develop a strong counter argument that will make them look silly. Maybe you could write an indepth review for the game and put a link in your signature or something like that.

You will be better for the experience in knowing that sometimes against doubters and people who are blinded by their own opinions...we have to fight for the things we love.

Its great if its your first MMO but once you learn about other MMO's you realize, Man, this game sucks compared to others.pwilletts

QFT. Most people start with Runescape, and they'll get all excited about it. But when people find out about other free games like Rappelz, Ragnarok, etc. they tend to think that Runescape wasn't that great in the end. Well, atleast that's how I saw it.

What is really stupid are the World of Warcraft vs Runescape videos on Youtube. It's the Internet version of going to a school and beating kids to death. :(Nerkcon

Anyways, for a java game (and a browser one at that too) , it's brilliant.

Besides the fact that it is a true browser mmo (and in java too), and the deep skill system, it doesn't have very many redeeming qualities. The community is just horrible.

Yeah the community is horrible. It is made up of a lot of kids. That is probably the worst part about it. Other than that, it is a relativly great game.

actually I thought it was good back then but then the developers I guess snapped because all their updates were all garbage and now the game is just garbage now

I dont see anything wrong with Runescape. I played the game for about 2 years. And then I moved to other games like DAoC and WoW. But for my first MMO I thought that was a great game. There was alot of skills you could do in that game. most of the game is around crafting, but it is pretty cool.

I recently saw that Runecape updated there graphics and website and such, but it is only open the members. But it looks pretty good now.

The only thing I like about Runescape, is the job system. Theres alot of stuff you can do, but it is very slow.

This forums is not for little kids and the majority have played mmo's before. Sense we're all past that basic point what is wrong with saying the game sucks?

I know what you mean, hell i still have my lvl 135 acc with 99 rc ( top 200 last time i checked) and 200m+ gear :D the memories are crazy :(Immortal_Evil
