I don't get it. You have to take your PC to your TV and plug it in.....uh, can't we do that already? Why do we need STEAM's big-picture for that? I doon't get it, am I missing something?

Now when their smaller pc/consoles come out then yeah but I don't get this...

If you're using your PC on a tv with a controller, how do you expect to manage controlling steam's interface without a mouse? This solves that

I think it simply makes Steam more like a console or more comfortable as an HTPC. You could say that it was Valve experimenting with the idea of having their own console long before the Steam Machines were a concept.

A keyboard and mouse in your typical home theater setup is awkward and not all that great. Despite what people here will say, 99% of PC gamers don't bother with such a setup because it's incredibly cumbersome.

Steam Big Picture mode allows you to use Steam easily with a controller which is far more optimal for playing games in your typical home theater setup.

Your phrasing is hilarious. Yes, you could use a mouse, but this bypasses a step and just streamlines things for a simpler experience. I personally have no use for it as like you I'll just use a mouse prior to picking up a controller, but I can see why people would use and enjoy big picture mode.

Another problem is that Steam's classic interface has small text. It may be tough to read at a distance.

It's great for games like Mark of the Ninja, but I wouldn't use it for say, Skyrim or Far Cry 3 cos the resolution would be crap.

i find it rather pointless really.

I have a 42" tv and can comfortably use m&k with it.(the cable is quite long)

I keep my desktop next to my TV and use a controller a lot. I also have a fold-able table nearby to serve as a surface for my kb&m if need be. I prefer this greatly to my old desk setup which was nice and all, but just doesn't compare to the TV setup. I can still use kb&m with my office chair or if I want to use a controller from the couch I can easily do so without having a long HDMI cable running from desk to TV. It's all about versatility, being chained to a desk is no fun. If I really want to game on a desk I can just use my ASUS G75. Being 3-5 ft from a 42 inch TV is far more immersive than being at a desk with my old 23 inch Asus monitor for me. I probably will keep this setup until I upgrade my monitor to a 27inch 1440p or a 4k monitor (a long time).

keyboard and mouse are a bit awkward to use at a couch. big picture lets you use a controller instead. i really like it honestly... just wouldn't play any multiplayer fps that way is all.

It does when your TV can't handle 1920 x 1200

Or, given the SteamOS and Steam Machines, are enabling PC gamers easier access to play on the couch. Right now it's annoying.

Trying to use Windows 7 or Windows 8 with a mouse and keyboard in a living-room, home theater setup. Lots of cords, lots of small text, lots of annoying things.

Big picture mode helps quite a bit and SteamOS should be even better.

Right now the only cords I have are for kb&m (lost my wireless kb&m receiver when I moved), which is still not ideal. I have the UI scaled up so the small text is bearable at the moment. Big picture mode has been quite buggy at times, but it's improving. I think I may install software to recognize my controller as kb&m input, windows need more input options to actually control the OS.

My computer room is adjacent to my TV room. I run a 32 foot HDMI cable under the carpet to the TV and use an Xbox 360 controller with my PC. If I put Stream in Big Picture Mode, I can control Steam from my couch. It's amazing. It's the best of both worlds. Launch games are $10 cheaper - usually, you can play at higher resolution and settings, and you can relax on the couch. So if you like playing games on your PC with a controller, big picture is amazing. If you hit the Xbox Guide button, it brings up the steam menu, for instance.

if your TV can't handle 1920x1200, neither the normal steam interface nor anything else can change that. resolution never changes with steams big picture (of the interface or the games).
