Because we are recommending upon the assumption that the TC doesn't want to spend ridiculous amounts of money for a processor that is closely matched to a cheaper alternative when overclocked.

This is pretty much it. I guess I missed that out in the OP.

Assumptions never lead to anything good especially when it comes to the internet.

Yup. But TBH, I don't think it's worth the $70 price premium compared to the Q9550.

It all depends on the highest CPU your motherboard will support. The qx9770 and qx9775 were the best LGA 775 CPUs made however, I think one of them if not both have been discontinued. The best LGA 775 CPU out now is the 9650. However, to be honest I'd just recommend that you get a Core i5 and a P55 motherboard for the amount of money that it's going to cost you to upgrade your CPU (hopefully you already have some DDR3 RAM around some place). Or if not the just sell you current motherboard and CPU and just get yourself a core i5 setup anyway (no need to waste money on a socket type that is going to be obsolete). Or you can go with an AMD config if you'd like. ;) ;) ;) :) :)

QX9775 is socket lga771 and it's not compatible with with socket 775. So the best lga775 cpus are the QX9770 and the QX9650.

If you want the best price/performance cpu then the q6600 is the best given that it cheap and can be overclocked without fuss to 3.2ghz and can be pushed to 3.6ghz (only the g0 stepping version though, the B3 stepping version produces heat like a flamethrower).

Save up ~$450 for an i5, mobo and DDR3 RAM.

For example

Core i5 750, Gigabyte P55 UD4P + 4GB OCZ Obsidian DDR3-1600 for $406.97 - $20 MIR = $386.97

Thats a bit nuts. I'm trying to save up for a car so forking for a whole new system is not really an option.

Oh well why didn't you say so? :). Alright I'd say a Q9400 or Q9550 will do you well (hopefully your motherboard supports these) ;)
