Personally I just use AVG Free. I know there are better, but it depends on your use of the internet too. If you do a lot of porn surfing and randomly opening files then you're at a much higher risk. If you are smart online then grab AVG. I haven't been bothered by a virus in years. And you could say, "..that you know of." But, yes I would know. I'm anal about process watching and bogging lol.
I recommend MSE. It offers good protection without ever annoying the user. You won't know it's there.

I'd second the AVG recomendation. Between that and MSE you should be fine.
I use Norton :o I've used it for years, apart from when it was really hogging up my system. That was when I went to AVG, god I hated that programme, so I tried McAfee and that was even worse, so I tried Norton again, by that time they'd got their act back together and now I don't even notice it.
avast.
lol @ avg how can anyone still use that.
norton is also trash.

Norton has changed a lot since it was created. You can't assume that because your version was bad that the current version is. It used to be very heavy but the newer version is pretty light and customizable. However, I did uninstall it because I just don't get viruses (I'm not into illegal downloading and all that stuff).
All right looks like I'm just going to go with MSE, can I also use that with another anti-virus software?
Actually for some reason, McAfee is managing my firewall, not Windows Firewall, so should I just let it manage it after getting MSE, or should I uninstall it, and enable Windows Firewall somehow.
Get rid of mcafee, it's basically a virus itself imo. Scan occasionally with Malwarebytes and you'll be safe from anything.Actually for some reason, McAfee is managing my firewall, not Windows Firewall, so should I just let it manage it after getting MSE, or should I uninstall it, and enable Windows Firewall somehow.

MSE. I can't see norton as a viable solution anymore, I've seen people test it, and it almost always failed to get rid of the infections.AlexKidd5000
Never had a problem (well not since they sorted out the bloatware issues) with Norton stopping infections but maybe I'm just not going to the nasty places to pick them up.

Well hopefully they've improved it since then. People were testing it against some pretty nasty malware.Actually for some reason, McAfee is managing my firewall, not Windows Firewall, so should I just let it manage it after getting MSE, or should I uninstall it, and enable Windows Firewall somehow.

McAfee has got to be one of the worst out there. get rid of it now.

Yeah it came with my laptop, and the firewall is innsanely annoying already uninstalled it. Before that i used kaspersky on my desktop, and it was great for while unitl for some reason it started bogging down my cpu with a process called avp.exe. It was taking atleast 40% of my cpu up! Running everyday tasks on my already weak pentium d cpu was a nightmare. So I think im going to stick with mse for AV and malwarebytes for scanning is that good? Or should I opt for paaid programs?[QUOTE="Masenkoe"][QUOTE="pl4yer_f0und"]

The #1 thing to protect yourself is to don't click stupid stuff and don't fall for stupid stuff - phishing emails, bad links, bad websites, etc.
I have never been keylogged or hacked at all.
Been using avast FREE forever and it does the job. Blocks bad websites if I happen to click on one, has built in chest, good scanner, doesn't hog resources, doesn't think everything is a virus, doesn't annoy you in games and I can go on.
Avast and built in Windows Defender is all I need. I use to have malware bytes but I never ran it often. I downloaded it a few months ago and my computer was clean so I uninstalled again.
any of the free ones work fine, like the other guy said, don't be an idiot when you surf and you won't get viruses.
I would avoid Norton as much as possible, it makes your computer do a ton of things so it slows down a ton, I heard that the company also creates viruses just so that their software shows that they are stopping it. It is also very difficult to completely uninstall it, my friend had get my other friend who works as a tech support to get rid of it for him last spring using another program since norton was screwing with his laptop's networking or something and not letting him install game. He told me that norton causes problems everyday for customers and that its the devil xD
Just ran the McAfee Clean up utility and installed MSE and Malwarebytes. Both run very smoothly, and time will tell if they both perform as well as advertise. Thanks guys for all the help!
On the PCs I build for randoms I usually just install MSE. For friends or friends of friends who I build computers for that specifically ask for an AV I get them NOD32.
I've been using Maleware Bytes for about 2-3 years. It's $25, and you can put it on 2-3 computers (can't remember exactly). It's not annoying at all, and loves getting rid of my viruses (when I rarely get them).
"Not really" Anti Virus Software, but Peerblock can prevent you from getting viruses and what not off websites alone (so long as you have it on lol).
